Destination: Woolwich

The last week has gone fast and quiet. I've been alone some days at home because my housemates have left for a familiar visit and Toni, the guy from Girona, left on thursday. Everything alright at work too because we've finally finished the tedious task of cleaning stone by stone the roman road across the site and we've taken the photos to rectify (don't worry if you don't know what this means, it's hard to explain in few words). It was really crap after July's flood. So I chose an area and I've started digging until the natural gravel. Once I got there, the same as always: recording, context sheets, photos... It's not very funny but it's more entertaining.

Anyway, my head has been in another places. By one hand I'm still sad for leaving this house, although it looks like I'll be able to stay a bit longer than we agreed at the beginning. I've also spent some time thinking about on November 3rd I'll finally meet my nephew, my older sister and my mother (she'll be at my sister's for a couple of days with us). Besides, a bit later I'll meet my middle sister (who will make me uncle of another nephew next March again!!) And I'm keen to start next week's job at Woolwich Arsenal.

I'm fed up with field work, very tired. I've never been a field archaeologist although I don't mind and it's also good to dig sometime for longer or shorter periods (the more things I can do, the better). But I don't want to be considered as a digger because I'm not actually. So, not only I'm happy for working with the buildings department but also because I'm out of the field work digging on site for some weeks. We'll see how many they are. They'll be two by the moment (with the week I'm travelling to Palma between them) but some changes may happen. That's why, with so much movement for the next few weeks, I don't know how able I'll be to attend the e-mail and the blog while I'm out of my house. Patience, dear visitor, is a virtue...

Destino: Woolwich

Roller coasters

The monotony has been broken, negatively, by several alterations and I'm not in a good mood. This last two weeks have been unstable and I feel my body like if I had got on two roller coasters. I have even felt some stomach upset and I don't know if it has a direct relationship with the intense emotions or it has been just a medical anecdote. Some things have changed, another are changing, another will change and another might never change. I don't use to like surprises, specially if they're unpleasant.

First of all, I'm afraid that I'll have to leave one of the best things that have happened to me in the last months, perhaps I should even say "years": live in the house and with the people I'm currently living. Like in the last time I had to move, nothing bad has happened, besides I have a lot of time to look for another bedroom. But two weeks ago, Xavier explained me why he needs available the space I'm currently taking. I understand and share his point of view, so I have no choice but to convince myself about this will end before I had liked. I get shocked at the beginning because my home situation is the cornerstone which kept the balance of my present and my next future. But now I find it much less dramatic and I take it like a new chance to think about some ideas I left some months ago. Leaving from here will be very painful, though.

Regarding to the job, being back on site hasn't been good either. I feel less and less motivated and what we're doing now is mainly the cleaning of certain areas so I can't expect anything exciting. I hope to change soon and I have two possibilities for that. By one hand I have the buildings department, who have already given me a project. It's at Woolwich Arsenal, an old group of buildings were guns and armaments were manufactured and they're located at Greenwich, Southeast London. I don't know much about the place yet, except that the famous football team Arsenal was founded by workers from those factories. I should start on monday 22nd and spend there the rest of the week, during several weeks. But we're waiting for some confirmation from the management team of the works on site. By the other hand, I'm thinking about applying for another job to join the geomatics department. I'd learn how to use informatic programs and spacial recording methodologies very useful for an archaeologist and also to use them in my work with the buildings department. However, in case I finally get this job, I'd start from zero, so they may offer the job to another candidate with some experience in this discipline.

Something that hasn't been terrible but came at a bad moment it's been the attempted robbery of my bike last thursday night. Some bastard tried to steal my bike from the front part of the house where I use to leave it. They couldn't because I have it locked, but they stole the saddle and bent a bit the back wheel so I had to take it to the bikes' workshop to straighten it up (
£4=6€=8$). They also tried to steal Xavier's bike but fortunately it was hardly damaged. Sons of a bitch.

But not everything has gone sloping down in this ride on the roller coaster. The slope up came on October 2nd, in the Balearic Islands, where my first nephew was born, so I've turned into an uncle. He weighed nearly 3 kilos and he looks very clever in the photos they've sent to me, with very lively eyes. I feel like meeting him now, but I'll have to wait a few weeks more. I've already listen to him through the telephone and he "sounded" very cute. Besides, I went for dinner one night with Chao and Vanessa to a chinese restaurant they like (and who I am not to let them advise me about this subject). We got fun, had some laughs, told each other what have happened lately and what we'll do in the next months. Besides, they gave a scarf as a present to me, which will be useful for the coming winter. Another day I went for dinner with a girl who I met by chance. She has just arrived to Oxford to study a postgrad and she saw the advertisement I wrote in internet four months ago to look for a bedroom so she got in contact with me in order to ask if I could help her with some advise for her search. We've kept in contact since then through some e-mail and she has ended living just 20 seconds ago from my current place by chance. We'll see how the weeks go by from now.

After these last 4 months of calmness, stillness and peace, it looks like everything is fidgeting again. My head keeps thinking and thinking. But, who said that all this isn't happening to allow better things come?
