Bahrain Oct-Nov '09

I am finally back at home in the Basque Country since last Friday evening. After almost two weeks in the UK working, meeting friends, travelling between London, Oxford, Reading, Manchester and back to London, etc. now is time to meet family, friends and enjoy my dearest city. I will keep posting entries on the blog of course, but let me leave you with some photos I took in Bahrain and I didn't know well where/when to show them. This first had to be dedicated to a large part of the Bengalis who helped us on-site. These are the ones we had at the beginning. The company kept changing them and only two remained at the end of the project.
Finalmente estoy de vuelta en casa en el País Vasco desde el pasado viernes por la noche. Después de casi dos semanas en el Reino Unido trabajando, reencontrándome con amigos, viajando entre Londres, Oxford, Reading, Manchester y vuelta a Londres, etc. ahora es tiempo de estar con la familia, amigos y disfrutar de mi queridísima ciudad. Seguiré posteando entradas en el blog por supuesto, pero déjame que te deje unas fotos que tomé en Bahrain y no sabía muy bien dónde/cuándo enseñar. Esta primera tenía que estar dedicada a gran parte de los Bengalíes que nos ayudaron en el yacimiento. Estos son los que tuvimos al principio. Su empresa les cambiaba cada x tiempo y sólo dos seguían estando al final del proyecto.


This is the camel I used to ride to go to work every morning, haha. No, seriously, I thought I'd see more camels in Bahrain but this was the only one! At least it was a nice and friendly one.
Este es el dromedario que montaba todas las mañanas para ir a trabajar, jaja. No, en serio, creí que vería más camellos o dromedarios en Bahrein ¡pero este fue el único! Al menos era simpático y amigable.

We found this kitten on site one day. It was alone, very thin, hungry and it was human-friendly, unlike most cats in Bahrain. It was tiny!
Encontramos este minino en el yacimiento un día. Estaba solo, muy flaco, hambriento y era amistoso con los humanos, al contrario de la mayoría de los gatos en Bahrein. ¡Era diminuto!



Now seriously, this is the car I used to drive every morning to go on-site... hahaha :P
Ahora en serio, este es el coche que solía conducir todas las mañanas para ir al yacimiento... jajaja :P





The next photos were taken in Manama, the capital. The building on the photo is Bab Al-Bahrain, which used to be the former 'gates' of the city from the port although they reclaimed plenty of land and it is now far from the coastline.
Las siguientes fotos fueron tomadas en Manama, la capital. El edificio de la foto es Bab Al-Bahrain, que solía ser las antiguas 'puertas' de la ciudad desde el puerto aunque ganaron mucho terreno al mar y hoy está lejos de la costa.

Bahrain Financial Harbour is a symbol of the great development that business are experimenting in this tiny country. These towers are right in front of Bab Al-Bahrain.
La Bahía Financiera de Bahrein es un símbolo del gran desarrollo que los negocios están experimentando en este diminuto país. Estas torres están justo enfrente de Bab Al-Bahrain.


A traditional cafeterina in a poor area of the city. The tea is really good.
Una cafetería tradicional en una zona pobre de la ciudad. Ponen un té muy bueno.

These are a couple of mosques whose minarets I liked.

Now the photos are from Muharraq, the town and island where the site was. This is a simple alley.
Ahora las fotos son de Muharraq, la ciudad e isla donde estaba el yacimiento. Esto es una simple callejuela.








This is an old house. Muharraq used to be the capital of Bahrain so there are some pretty old and formerly luxurious buildings.
Esta es una casa vieja. Muharraq era la capital de Bahrein así que hay algunas casas bastante viejas pero que antiguamente eran lujosas.







Saikh Isa was a rich merchant who lived in this house in the 18th century. The house is pretty well preserved, the ticket costs almost nothing and there are very few visitors. I saw nobody else.
Saikh Isa fue un mercader rico que vivió en esta casa en el siglo XVIII. La casa está bastante bien conservada, la entrada no cuesta casi nada y hay muy pocos visitantes. Yo no vi a nadie.

Other parts of the house. It was huge, with rooms for guests, servants, family and private premises for the Saikh himself.
Otras partes de la casa. Era enorme, con cuartos de invitados, sirvientes, familia y aposentos privados del propio Saikh.

Here I am, smiley and happy to be there and to see you visiting the blog :) The tower on the left is a wind-tower: an old system to collect the blowing breeze and cool down the premises below.
Aquí estoy, sonriente y contento de estar ahí y de verte visitando el blog :) La torre de la izquierda es una torre de viento: un viejo sistema para recoger la brisa que sopla y ventilar las dependencias debajo.


In Muharraq in general and at the house in particular there are lots of doors with carved details. This one is the mos impressive one I saw.
En Muharraq en general y en la casa en particular hay muchas puertas de madera con detalles tallados. Esta es la más impresionante que vi.







This photo was taken on the beach. No matter how far I walk, the water level rarely rises above my knees.
Esta foto fue tomada en la playa. No importa cúanto me aleje, el nivel del agua raramente queda por encima de mis rodillas.




Finishing some business with my friend Rasheed... Hehe. Just joking of course. Rasheed is my main source of knowledge about Bahrain and Islam. He was who patiently explained me all I know, answering my questions very kind.
Cerrando algunos negocios con mi amigo Rashid... Jeje. Es broma por supuesto. Rashid es mi principal fuente de conocimiento sobre Bahrein y el Islam. Él me ha enseñado pacientemente todo lo que sé, respondiendo a mis preguntas muy amable.



This one was taken in a nice place in the poor part of a small town. The water-pipe tasted good and the owner was a good and kind host.
Y esta fue tomada en un agradable lugar en la parte pobre de un pueblo. La pipa de agua sabía rica y el dueño era un buen y amable anfitrión.


Well, you see I've adapted very well to the Midlle East.
Bueno, ya puedes ver que me he adaptado bastante bien a Oriente Medio.
