Manchester & Liverpool

 Es justo empezar la serie de fotos presentándote a Ray, mi ángel de la guarda en Manchester y una de las personas que más favores me ha hecho en los últimos años, ¡y aún sigue! A saber en qué callejón oscuro estaría yo muerto hoy en día si no fuera por él... Ray es puro, 100% mancuniano. Es la personificación de Manchester: tronchante, campechano, directo, sincero, moderno, rezuma música por los 4 costados, gruñón si se cabrea pero amable por naturaleza, de mediana edad, un poco gris..., un fabuloso anfitrión, un sabio, muy internacional y muy gay. La foto nos la sacó su amiga Andrea (una bomba de mujer) el domingo que fuimos de barbacoa a casa de Angie y Karl, amigos suyos.

It's fair to start the gallery introducing you to Ray, mi guardian angel in Manchester and one of the persons who have done me more favours in the last few years, and still doing them! Who know in which dark alley I would be laying dead nowadays if it hadn't been for his help... Ray is pure, 100% Mancunian. He is the personification of Manchester: hilarious, good-natured, straight forward, honest, modern, oozes music, grumpy if he gets pissed off but naturally kind, middle aged, a bit grey..., a fabulous host, a wise, very international and very gay. The photo was taken by his friend Andrea (a formidable woman) on the Sunday when we went to the barbecue organised by Angie and Karl, friends of them.

 Vamos a por algo un poco cultural. Esto es la biblioteca central, una de las más grandes del Reino Unido. Ahora mismo está en obras hasta Septiembre, creo.
  Let's go for something a bit cultural. This is the central library, one of the biggest in the UK. They are doing some works right now and they will last until September, I think.

 Algunos edificios que me gustan de la ciudad. Tienen un toque clásico. Verás que hay gran variedad de edificios en las siguientes fotos: clásicos, industriales, modernos...
  Some of the buildings in the city that I like. They have a classic touch. On the next pictures you will see that there is a wide variety of buildings: classic, industrial, modern...

 Chinatown, donde tienen unas costillas a la sal y pimienta para chuparse los dedos literalmente. El Chinatown de Manchester es bastante grande y sucio. A mí me encanta pasear por las callejuelas, ver los carteles, restaurantes, tiendas...
  Chinatown, where they have some mouth-watering salt'n'pepper ribs. Manchester's Chinatown is pretty big and dirty. I love walking on the alleys, see the signs, restaurants, shops...

  The City Council House

 Mi edificio favorito: el Palacio de Justicia Civil. Yo vivía a 5 minutos y lo veía siempre que iba al centro.
  My favourite building: the Civil Justice Centre. I used to live 5 minutes away and I saw it every time I went to the city.

 Estas fotos estás sacadas en el Northern Quarter. Es un barrio lleno de antiguos almacenes y pequeños edificios relacionados con el pasado comercial e industrial de la ciudad. Actualmente es una zona muy bohemia con decenas de pequeñas tiendas, restaurantes, bares, cafés... Está pegado al centro y es la zona de moda. Me encanta pasear por aquí también.
  These photos were taken in the Northern Quarter It is a district full of former warehouses and small buildings related to the commercial and industrial past. Today it is a bohemian area with tens of small shops, restaurants, bars, cafes... It is right next to the city centre and it is a trendy zone. I love walking here too.

 Urbis es un centro de exposiciones generalmente con la vida urbana y todo lo relacionable con ello. Ahora está cerrado por obras y pronto abrirán el Museo Nacional del Fútbol.
  Urbis is an exhibition centre usually about urban life and everything related to it. Now it is closed due to some works in order to open in the next few months the National Football Museum.

 Este es otro de los edificios más emblemáticos y el más alto del Reino Unido fuera de Londres. A mí no me gusta nada, pero hay gente a la que le encanta. Es un monstruo que sobresale por encima de todo sin nada en común con otros edificios. Además es cuadrado y punto, nada característico. Si no fuera tan alto, sería un edificio más, si aportar nada. Es el hotel Hilton (gracias Paris, lo has vuelto a hacer: llamativo y hortera).
  This is another of the most emblematic buildings and the tallest in the UK out of London. I don't like it at all, but some people love it. It is a monster sticking out from everything else without anything in common with the other buildings. Besides it is just square, full stop, nothing distinctive. If it wasn't that tall, it would be just another building, contributing with nothing. It is the Hilton Hotel (thanks Paris, you just did it again: flashy and tacky).

 Estos edificios están todos en una zona muy moderna también cerca de mi antiguo apartamento. Hace pocos años aquí sólo había solares, dice Ray. Ahora está todo lleno de oficinas, servicios, restaurantes, etc. También me encanta pasear por esta zona ¡jajaja!
  All these buildings are in a very modern area also close to my former flat. A few years ago there were only empty plots, Ray says. Now it is all full of offices, services, restaurants, etc. I also love walking in this area, hahaha!

 Los edificios de ladrillo y los callejones estrechos de la primera mitad del siglo XX son también una característica de la ciudad. Sin embargo, a diferencia del Northern Quarter, parece que esta zona se dedicaba más a los negocios y las oficinas de las empresas y no tanto al almacenaje o la parte industrial.
  Brick buildings and narrow alleys from the first half of the XXth century are also a feature of the city. However, unlike the Northern Quarter, it looks like this area was more focused on businesses and companies' headquarters and not so much to storing or the industrial aspect.

 Nos pasamos a la otrora floreciente Liverpool. Este edificio en el puerto era una de las compañías más importantes y símbolo del poder económico de la ciudad. Fue el primer edificio del Reino Unido que fue construido con una estructura interna metálica y la fachada exterior en piedra (hasta entonces, fachada e interior siempre eran de piedra o ladrillo). Según la tradición, si los pájaros que coronan las torres se caen, Liverpool caerá en ruina.
  We go now to the formerly flourishing Liverpool. This building in the port used to be one of the most important companies and a symbol of the city's economic power. It was the first building in the UK built with an internal metal-frame structure and an external stone shell (up to that moment, shell and structure were always made of stone or brick). According to the tradition, Liverpool will be a ruined city if the birds on top of the building fall down.

 No pueden faltar los Beatles en Liverpool (Ray: "Eso fue hace casi 50 años. ¡Por Dios que lo superen ya! Si quieres te hago la foto, pero no entramos.")
  Beatles and Liverpool go always together (Ray: "That was almost 50 years ago. For God's sake, when will they get over it!? I can take the photo if you want, but we shan't go in.")

 Esto es el curioso símbolo de la ciudad: el Lambanana (Traductor Google). Es una mezcla de cordero (lamb) y plátano (banana). Está por todas partes, de todos los colores, en camisetas, llaveros, postales...
  This is the funny symbol of the city: the Lambanana. It is a mixture of lamb and banana. It is everywhere, in every colour, T-shirts, key rings, postcards...

 El Lisbon es un pub gay muy mítico. La decoración es una pasada, muy recargado todo. Supongo que antiguamente era uno de los pocos, o tal vez el único, de los bares gay de Liverpool. Ni idea por qué eligieron ese nombre; seguramente porque Lisbon suena parecido a Lesbian, que es como el "apodo" que tiene :-)
  The Lisbon is a mythic gay pub. The decoration is stunning, everything quite excessive. I guess that in the old times it was one of the few, or maybe the only, gay pubs in Liverpool. I have no idea about why they chose that name; probably because Lisbon sounds similar to Lesbian, which is some sort of "nick name" :-)

 Algunas imágenes del que fue uno de los puertos más importantes del continente. Mercancías y pasajeros pasaron por aquí a millones.
  Some picture of the once most important ports in the continent. Goods and travellers went through this spot by millions.

 En este edificio estaba la sede de la compañía propietaria del Titanic. Cuando el barco se hundió, el presidente de la compañía salió al balcón y leyó la lista de los fallecidos. Tardó varias horas y decenas de miles de personas se concentraron allí.
  The company which owned the Titanic had its headquarters in this building. When the ship sank, the president of the company went out on the balcony and read the list with all the casualties. It took him several hours and tens of thousands of people gathered.

 Estas piezas de equipajes son un símbolo que recuerdan los millones de inmigrantes que partieron de esta ciudad, la mayoría de ellos hacia América.
  This luggage pieces are a symbol to remember the millions of immigrants who left from this city, most of them towards America.

 Liverpool tiene dos catedrales, una junto a la otra. Esta de aquí, que por dentro parece una mega discoteca con una iluminación brutal y el dj donde está el altar, es la católica. Sin embargo, no es la que originalmente debería ser. El proyecto inicial era para un edificio inmenso del que sólo se construyó la cripta (en la foto inferior derecha). Lo que pusieron encima no tiene nada que ver con lo que debería haber sido, pero mola más.
  Liverpool has two cathedrals, one next to the other. This one here, which looks inside like a mega club with an awesome illumination and the dj where the altar is, belongs to the Catholics. However, it is not the one originally planned. The initial project it was for a huge building but they only built the crypt (lower right picture). What they built on top has nothing to do with what it should have been, but it is cooler.

 Y esta es la otra catedral, la anglicana. Es un edificio mucho más normalito que la católica y mucho menos llamativo. Yo me quedo con la otra, pero insisto en que debería de ser una discoteca y no una catedral...
  And this is the other cathedral, for the Church of England. It is a much more normal building than the Catholic one and not so flamboyant. I prefer the other one, but I insist on it becoming a club instead of a cathedral...

 Y terminamos la galería con la mujer con la que comparto habitación siempre que duermo en casa de Ray. En la puerta del estudio tiene este póster a tamaño natural de la gran Dolly Parton (a pesar de lo bajita que es). Ray: "Todo el mundo debería tener una Dolly Parton en casa".
  And we finish the gallery with the woman with whom I share the room with every time I stay at Ray's. On the studio's door he has this life-size poster of the great Dolly Parton (despite her short height). Ray: "Everyone should have a Dolly Parton at home".
