Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

Algunas cosas en esta vida son malas
Te pueden poner muy triste
Otras cosas te hacen jurar y maldecir
Cuando pinches en hueso
No te quejes y silba
Y esto ayudará a sobrellevarlo

No seas bobalicón
Pon morritos y silba
- ese es el truco.

Dog eat dog

There it is, I did it again. Some time ago I promised to myself that I would stop adapting to the world and I was going to make it adapt to me. But I let down my guard and a hollow hope invaded me, leaving me with a wishful thought of happiness that doesn't take me anywhere and puts to sleep my real desire. It happened again that I accelerate or brake whenever others need, not when I want. It happened again that my situation depends on what others want to do or undo while I am waiting for them to tell me so I can adapt. It happened again that I've been paying more attention to my thoughts rather than my feelings, but my feelings tell me now that I shouldn't keep walking this path. So I have to find another path... or make my own. I am turning into a sour person and I don't feel like. Neither those around me nor myself deserve such thing.

If 2013 was a year of internal changes, these 5 months of 2014 are not exactly seeing things settling down, definitely not internally but not even externally any more. The moment arrives again when I have to play my cards. If I think I've never made a wrong decision so far, I don't see the need to start being afraid of anything at this point. It's not just about luck: this is a hand of cards and not the roulette. You have to see what you've got, be cautious, patient, clever, keep your head cool and do things at the right time. The game won't be easy but I think I've got a good hand and some money to gamble. I don't think the game will be short either... but I still have some time.

My life as an adult started somewhere between October 22nd and 24th 2001. I was 20 years old back then. After that moment, I realised that every decision to be made was going to be relevant perhaps for the rest of my life.

#Selfie

When Jason was at the table
I kept on seeing him look at me while he was with that other girl
Do you think he was just doing that to make me jealous?
Because he was totally texting me all night last night
and I don't know if it's a booty call or not
Sooo... like what do you think?
Did-Did you think that girl was pretty?
How did that girl even get in here?
Did you see her?
She's so short and that dress is so tacky
Who wears cheetah?
It's not even summer, why does the DJ keep on playing Summertime Sadness?
After we go to the bathroom, can we go smoke a cigarette?
I really need one
But first, LET ME TAKE A SELFIE

Can you guys help me pick a filter?
I don't know if I should go with XX Pro or Valencia
I wanna look tanned
What should my caption be?
I want it to be clever
How about "Livin' with my bitches, Hashtag LIVE"
I only got 10 likes in the last 5 minutes
Do you think I should take it down?
LET ME TAKE ANOTHER SELFIE

Wait, pause, Jason just liked my selfie
What a creep
Is that guy sleeping over there?
Yeah, the one next to the girl with no shoes on
That's so ratchet..
That girl is such a fake model
She definitely bought all her Instagram followers
Who goes out on Mondays?
OK, let's go take some shots
Oh no (uh), I feel like I'm gonna throw up
Oh wait, nevermind I'm fine
Let's go dance
There's no vodka at this table
Do you know anyone else here?
Oh my god, Jason just texted me
Should I go home with him?
I GUESS I TOOK A GOOD SELFIE

#SELFIE

Quiero salir morena
¿Y qué texto le pongo?
Quiero algo inteligente

Vamos a bailar
No hay vodka en esta mesa
¿Conoces a alguien más aquí?
Oh dios, Jason me acaba de escribir
¿Me voy a casa con él?
CREO QUE ME SAQUÉ UN BUEN SELFIE

Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock...

You must be thinking that I don't exist any more because I hardly post new entries. Or maybe you think that I am having fun all the time, partying, travelling, raving, visiting such and such or taking a train who-knows-where as that's what I've been doing last year month after month. Well, neither the first nor the latter statements match the reality: I still exist but I haven't been so quiet in my entire life. I think that, even though I keep working, I am even more inactive than the few months I spent unemployed in Manchester. At least I had a whole new city and the surrounding area to explore. Not that I know Frankfurt and the neighbouring villages like the back of my hand, but going to the town next door is not an idea that I find very exciting. Besides, it was summer when I was in Manchester; here we've had good weather only this week but still gets dark and chilly quite early.

I am not telling you anything lately because I don't find anything worth telling and interesting, simple as that. The year started very quiet but it started to be unbearable in February and so far it still is in March. I am bored to death and I don't want to bore you but it was about time to say that I am kicking alive even though it doesn't look like it. The reason for this immobility is the difficulties that I have right now to make plans in the short term. Some aspects of my life are stuck and I am waiting for news and developments so I can keep doing my stuff. Besides, due to an annoyingly long injury in a shoulder, I am not going to the gym either and that leaves a lot more of free time which I don't know how to fill by doing something productive. I am not motivated to do anything while I wait for decisions and events that don't depend on me but will condition the next months (even years?).

Weeks are passing and I do nothing but going from home to work and back. What I like the most is planning my trips and of course spending that time away, but I don't want to make plans now as I don't know if I will be able to realise them. On top of that, I have had to cancel a couple of weekend trips, which contributed to this swamp of free time and boredom. Two weeks ago I took a train to Cologne in carnival out of despair as I needed to do something and I couldn't stand another weekend here doing nothing (as little as I like carnival in general...). Thanks God I am going to Munich in a couple of weeks to evade from everything and just have pure fun! Besides, the motivation to start something like a good German course 2 or 3 evenings per week is also low for the same reason: the uncertain near future. It's the worst feeling for me, not to be in control.

I hope to clear up these doubts soon. I hope things go forward or backwards, let happen whatever has to happen for the good or for the bad, but may something happen, please! It is starting to be difficult to bear with this situation stuck in the middle of nowhere but it's not hard and I am ok, only... bored. That's the word that I use most often lately.

Tic-tac, tic-tac, tic-tac...

My 15 minutes of fame, Andy

Andy Warhol said that everyone would have 15 minutes of fame worldwide. Well, mine is not worldwide. I can't say it is a huge fame either but it is lasting a lot more than 15 minutes, actually a whole month: there I am, on the cover of BOX magazine, dripping water. I know, it's not Vanity Bear, but it isn't bad at all! BOX is a bearish free magazine that you can find in bars and shops with news and articles about current affairs and some photos of past events. Most people check it online in Germany and neighbouring countries so it is not often that you see it far away from the area of Cologne/Düsseldorf in other German cities. I'm very proud to be there, standing in front of everyone. One of the biggest bear events in Europe takes place in Cologne at the end of November (maybe the biggest) with plenty of parties and activities, so many more people usually check BOX's December issue to see what went on. In addition, there is another smaller photo on the first page with a basketball (no more flesh to show, sorry!). I'm becoming a bit of a "diva" lately always in front of the camera, haha! It's been a great anecdote to finish the year 2013.

The year 2013 is finishing... and I am a bit early this time compared to other years, looking back and seeing what happened since last Christmas even though there are still a few weeks left. I'm not going to complain and tell that it was a bad year because then Nestor will tell me off, and he is right, but it has been a year at least strange. It hasn't been as good as 2011 and 2012 either. My spirits have been more down than up, I sometimes felt I lack energy, my head has been often busy and wasting time with useless thoughts and I have some injuries in my body too (am I getting old?). One thing is true though: I have partied as much as other years or even more and, specially, I have travelled more than ever.

One of my objectives for this year was to visit new places. It's almost "unavoidable" for me to visit Cologne (again, I can't count on one hand the times I've been there), Berlin (I was only once -unbelievable), Düsseldorf (my yearly basketball tournament) and London (I couldn't miss the Final Four). But there was more: I've been a couple of times in Amsterdam, I've had a family visit in Krefeld, I've visited the historic Leipzig and its cute Gay Pride, I've had a blast in the Oktoberfest in Munich, I've been astonished walking in Istanbul, I've finally visited a friend in the port-city of Hamburg and I have spent some relaxing days in Vienna's streets and museums. I think I have filled the best expectations regarding this topic... And I've missed some other places, I have to leave something for the coming years!

But kilometres are not enough to keep a man alive. As I said, my head has been full of other things. I am a bit stuck personally and professionally, although God bless this stagnation which allows me to do everything I do. On the one hand, I think I should leave things as they are, because they are just fine. On the other, I wonder for how long I can be happy like this and if later will be too late to perform significant changes. Am I going to be happier... with a partner? ... furthering my education and changing my position or even the company? ... living in a different city? ... living in another country? I have no idea. Will I know it by the end of 2014? No idea either. What I know is that I have to make a bigger effort and focus more on keep learning German, even if it is slow.

Visit to the doctor

I went to the doctor last week. He sent me to a specialist who performed some tests on me. I had to go back this week to discuss the results. I got frozen when he told me...:

"You are not straight."
"Don't be such a dinosaur, doc! First of all, being gay is not a problem nowadays. And second, that's something that everyone knows, from here to the Far East. What a shitty doctor you are."
"No, no, don't get me wrong. Look at the x-rays picture of your back. Can you see your spine? It's not straight, see the lumbar area."
"Oh, fuck... Yes, yes. Now I get your point and you are right."

So, the thing is that I went to check my aching lower back and at this point of my life they found out that I've got scoliosis. If you run like crazy to check that on Wikipedia (I am not including the link here on purpose) you will freak out because they always explain and show the most extreme cases and photos. I just have a little. It is so little that it could not be found by normal examination when I was growing up (my mother used to take me there because two of my sisters had some problems). The doctor said that such a little thing can only be seen with x-rays. On top of that, apparently my left leg is slightly shorter than the right one, but less than a centimetre. So he said I should not be worried, it won't get much worse and it was nothing to switch on the alarms, being as I am a healthy sporty guy. I don't know... He looked so confident that I hesitate whether he is the best or I should go for a second opinion (because I read Wikipedia and now I am scared shitless).

The problem that made me go there in the first instance was another one and he gave me already some exercises that I have to do everyday; it's nothing, 5 minutes, just to work out the muscles in the lower back. I don't think a party summer like the one I am having is going to be the best option for this...

- ¡No joda, doctor! No sea usted carca.

28th of June

Today is the Gay Pride Day, faggot! I told you a couple of years ago why we celebrate it on the 28th of June. There will be parties throughout the weekend in some of the main cities in the world.

Two days ago I got this video on Google+ from an Italian friend (thank you Giuseppe). It's an advert about the celebration of Naples Pride 2013. It's set in one of the underground stations of the city and... I just love it. Simple as that. I was typing an entry full of obvious statements commenting the video and telling about more demonstrations, about this day still being needed, people in the closet, older people, the fear, the homophobia, the self-discrimination... A bore. And then I have thought what for. I think I better just point you at the video because it explains everything very well by itself, you enjoy it (or not) and both can keep doing what we were doing, right?

Happy day for everyone, faggot!

Despite his ferocious looks, Yury Noa is a charming guy, really nice, funny, humble, kind, sympathetic and very sweet. However, he turns into someone different when he points at you with a photo camera, even that of a mobile phone. He becomes serious, firm, demanding and almost dictatorial: "Not like that, this way. Be quiet, don't look here, touch the wall, less, more, not that much." Then some other times he can also take a photo and you don't even realise. He is not a professional, he hardly has any equipment, but the guy knows what to do. What he does have is a great eye and special skills to make reality appear better on his photos. These were taken mostly in Berlin throughout 2012, except for the last two (Frankfurt, February 2013). If you look closely, you can see him reflected on my pupil on a couple of pics.

Thirsty

People often use the example of the half full or half empty glass of water to determine whether a person is optimistic or pessimistic. That example has never worked with me though. I can't manage to give a simple answer. I don't consider myself optimist nor pessimist in general. I never knew what to answer because I didn't find that was the right question to ask. Some people say I am a strange guy because of my thoughts and how I express them, but I don't consider myself especially strange. The more I move and the more people I know, the more people I meet who share my ideas. What I can say it is true is that I've got some particularities, just the same as others but in a higher proportion, just to explain it somehow. Some people also tell me that they think I am clever, for sure others think I am not but they don't tell me. I don't consider myself especially clever either. I think it is true that I use my intellect in a different way to most, but it is not that I am more intelligent than the average. That's what makes me think and express in the way I do it and what makes many around me call me strange or even clever.

I've never seen that glass half full or half empty. Neither option suits me. For some years I've come to see that there is half glass of water, that's all. There is just half glass, full stop. The point is not to think whether my spirits are better or worse when I have a look at the glass; they remain unchanged after the first sight. To determine whether that's good or not, since everything is relative, I come back to think of me after seeing the amount of water. Will it be enough? Do I fancy drinking something else? Do I also fancy a snack with it? I will be in good or bad or the same spirits depending on how thirsty I am and what else I fancy.

During this year 2013 I am looking often at the glass and thinking about what it has and what I feel like. A friend of mine, even though I think he has his feet on the ground, has an esoteric touch. We both are Aquarius (just a few days difference) and we both have other things in common regarding our thoughts and the way we express them. He insists that he is having a year of changes and it is happening the same to me. To be honest, I don't know if it is just coincidence or not, but I can't tell him he's not right. I think that 2013 is a year in which I am changing, maybe finishing a cycle and starting another.

For this change, however, I am looking more inside than outside. I don't think this change will translate into a new job, a new flat, a new city or other material stuff of that kind. I think that the change (maybe an evolution, maybe not) happens in my thoughts and the way I express them. All the material aspects are quite ok in the way they are and I wish they remain the same for the time being. The glass of water looks the same as last year and the previous one and I was more than happy with that. My trips, my friends, the job, the studio, the parties and my life here keeps being great and I still like it. However, I look at the glass now, then I think about me and I see that it is not enough. I am not going to get in a rush, I am usually more reflexive than impulsive, but I want more from me and my life.

Sediento

Tampoco me considero especialmente inteligente.

¿Me apetece beber otra cosa?

Imperial Vienna

I spent a few days in Vienna last weekend. It was a bank holiday here (and also there) so I got a couple of days off and made it to the Austrian capital. There was time enough to explore the city's corners and I had also planned a day trip to the neighbouring Bratislava (really easy to reach by train or even boat on the Danube). On top of that, there were some parties I wanted to go to. I often check when there are events in the cities I want to visit so I can kill to birds with one stone. However, the visit hasn't been exactly like I planned it, so I had to change and play by ear.

First of all, the parties were much more quiet that I thought they'd be. I realised when I was already in Vienna and someone told me about the kind of club where they were taking place. I wanted to drink and dance with loud music until the early hours of the morning (plus I was staying hardly 2 minutes away from the venue), but they were more the kind of socialising, meeting old friends, lots of chatting and music in the background. Since I have no old friends in Vienna neither intentions to make new ones and my German is non existent, I didn't spend more than one hour one night before I was heading back home to make the most of the day from the morning after.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to make the most of almost any day or, again, not at least as initially expected. The weather has been miserable during my stay, with lots of rain, grey skies and unpleasant cold wind. You may have heard about the floods in the area between Germany, Austria and the Czeck Republic; well, Vienna was not flooded at all but the weather was like that. I decided to cancel any idea of a trip to Bratislava (maybe next time) and spent thus a lot of time indoors. Luckily, Vienna has some great museums, especially the Art History and the Natural History ones. Some of the most famous masterpieces are there, they are extremely beautiful buildings inside and the collections are quite well organised and displayed. It was great at least to wander around the galleries with no rush and music on the earphones. A lot of the time indoors was also spent in bars, restaurants (eating Schnitzel!), resting and relaxing on the bed playing videogames, doing nothing but lots of thinking; I needed some time for that too.

The only day with sun and no rain was Saturday, so I could finally walk in the town centre. Everything is very imperial in Vienna and there are a lot of historic buildings well preserved (both palaces but also dwelling houses). Besides, not only the imperial buildings and classic music are a sign of identity but also those from the Sezession style. Right next to where I was staying there were also some bars, night life and a very vibrant huge open-air market with lots of restaurants and shops, from vegetables to souvenirs. Certainly one of my favourite places of all those I've seen; I love this kind of street markets. The gardens around the former Imperial Palace, the ones surrounding the city council house, the pedestrian streets in the city centre, the museums quarter... They all make of Vienna a very beautiful place to visit, but try to avoid rainy days...

All in all it's been a nice visit. In the next few weeks The Tour 2013 will take me to some other places in Germany, a mixture of some new and others already visited. I am even planning a short trip by bike, but I don't know yet if I will make it. It's just an idea, there are other things I have to check. And of course, it will also depend on the weather!

Viena Imperial

London 2013

It's been already a couple of weeks since I attended the basketball Euroleague's Final Four in London. For those who are not familiar with the competition, the Final Four is a yearly event that takes places during three days with the 4 best teams in Europe. On the first day they play the semi-finals, then a day to rest and on the last day the game for the third place and the big final. They are four games at the highest level on this continent. They celebrate it in a different city each season and this year it was in London: perfect for me. I have always dreamt of attending this event and I knew that 2013 would be the year from the moment I heard it was going to be in London. I bought my tickets on the first day they were available last November.

London and England in general are not very keen on basketball. The national championship is one of the weakest in Europe, specially among the bigger countries. Everyone was a bit expectant to see the response from locals to the celebration of one of the most important basketball events worldwide. The presence of the supporters of the four teams (Real Madrid, F.C. Barcelona, CSKA Moscow and Olympiakos Athens) was granted but it would not be enough to fill the great O2. Well, even though the level of the games was quite good and I enjoyed them a lot, the organisation of the event was a disaster from my point of view, a pity.

First of all, the Euroleague didn't manage to sell out the tickets. The facts that London is accessible practically only by plane from other countries and that it is not exactly a cheap destination are not helping much to attract the crowd from the continent. I have heard that they actually said tickets were sold out, but that's not true. It may be true that they managed to "get rid" of all the tickets (they gave them almost or completely for free in the last minute), but the venue was not full at all not even during the final. For the last game there were a lot of people, true, but it was still far from being at capacity. As suspected, English people in general and Londoners in particular don't like basketball and the organisation hasn't been able to sell the Final Four as an interesting product for them. I really, seriously, have my doubts about the venue being just half full during the first and third games. Some months ago they played in that very same scenario two NBA season games between Raptors and Nets. Tickets were sold out, the venue full, supporters didn't come from across the pond yet there was no room for a pea in there. Why?

The shows for entertaining (?) the audience between games, during breaks and time-outs deserve some special comments. With all due respects to the brave dancers, I expected quite a lot more than a high-school dance choreography. It was quite boring to just seeing the typical jugglers with basket balls that you can see on any court in Europe along with the classic kids doing break dance on the floor or whatever it is called while another one is beatboxing, something that you can see on any corner of any biggish city. I like both break-dance and beatboxing, I think they've got great merit because people learn them on the street, no schools. But during a Final Four, after the fifth time in four games it starts to be boring. Play some music for God's sake! Make people stand up, dance, have fun!! Is there not money enough to play 2Unlimited hits from 20 years ago? Fuck, I am not even asking for Madonna. Is there nothing else than a kid making noises on a microphone for the umpteenth time? The highest point of boredom arrived... I don't even remember if it was between the games on the third day or during the final's break. To be honest, I was playing with my Nintendo DS. There was a show which, again, was spectacular and amazing: a big group of people throwing some very light big balls in the air and to each other in a coordinated and very precise way. That's great if you go to see the Cirque du Soleil, but a tedious show if you are looking forward to the emotion of the continent basketball finals.

I don't know... It's been the first time I attend a Final Four and I hope it was not the last one. Maybe it is always like that? I have my serious doubts, but maybe I am being too critical with something that is just normal and you can't expect more from it... Not everything was bad, of course. The shows were ok but just the first few times (the boring thing was seeing the same again and again). The level of the games was quite good (they are usually slow games with strong defences with not many points, but that was not the case). The Greek supporters were a lot and a show on their own. Oh, and my favourite thing, absolutely, were the beards sported by the start of the champion team Olympiakos Vasilis Spanoulis and Pero Antic, hahaha!!
