I have a friend from work, Alex, who married last weekend his fiancé, Günther. Here they are on the photo, all smiley. They married in Granada, Spain, Alex's home-town. Nowadays, the same-sex marriage is legally approved and exactly the same as straight marriage in Spain. Günther is German, but in Germany, same-sex marriage is not yet recognised as having the same rights and duties as a straight one; there is only some sort of civil partnership but it is not the same. Oh well, it will arrive at some point step by step. This is the 21st century and the society is making progress. Right are extended to everyone. LGBT community members are reaching significant goals and marriages are starting to be considered equal. Two people who are the same sex can marry, as easy as that... Well, no. Not just that easy. And if you don't believe me, ask Günther and Alex.

The first logic step if a couple want to marry in a civil ceremony is to go to the town hall. Günther goes and says: "I am German and I want to marry my partner. It should be easy because he is also an EU citizen." In the town hall they tell him that it is not possible, that they can't marry as one understands marriage. Not yet in Germany. They can have something similar and blah blah, but it is not the same. Alex and Günther look at each other and... no way! They want to be a properly married couple and they don't deserve less than others for being homosexual and love each other. So Alex thinks that, since he is Spanish, what he has to do to marry his partner is to go to the Spanish consulate in Frankfurt.

At the consulate, they tell him that he can not marry a German person being in Germany. That is to say, Alex could marry at the Spanish consulate Pancho from Guanajuato, Sakamoto from Makurazaki, Jeetendrah from Rajahmundry or Zongo from Ouagadougou (or even me!), but he can't marry Günther because he is German and this is Germany. If they want to do that, they have to go to the town hall. "But lady, the thing is that we have been already there and they told us that we can't marry as one understands marriage."

Determined to carry out his diabolic plan and marry the man he loves at all costs, Alex goes to Granada and asks in the town hall there. He is Spanish, that is Spain and two men can be a married couple there, they just can. "No, sir, you can't. You are Spanish but you live abroad. If you want to marry, you have to go to the embassy or consulate in the country where you live." "But we have been already there and we can't marry because my fiancé is German, so they told us to go to the town hall. But there they told us that we can't marry as one understands marriage."

And this is the brief story full of problems, slightly adapted to be posted on this blog, of how Alex had to register back in his home-town, sort out all the bureaucracy, send the documents and forms asking for a wedding with a foreign man (documents that, by the way, they disappeared for several months in a court with some sort of Bermuda Triangle until someone felt like finding them), organise everything from his real home in Frankfurt to, finally, be able to say "I do" and kiss his husband.

Alex and Günther have been lucky, after all... They are both EU citizens and, besides, Spain would allow to live in the country to the foreign spouse and give him a passport eventually. Unfortunately, this is not always like that. There are couples composed by two men or two women from different nationalities who have to live separated by thousands of kilometres sometimes because they can't marry as one understands marriage. The only way for this couples to be together it would be getting a passport thanks to family background in the country or a work permit for one in the other's country and this is very difficult, often impossible specially if one's country is much richer than the other's. In any case, the fact that they love each other would have nothing to do with the fact that one could be in the same country as the other to be able to be together. Many of these people end up losing the person they love after the difficulties of keeping a relationship like that without any prospect of improvement. So far, the countries in which a same-sex marriage is considered as an equal compared to straight married per law nowadays are (sorted by law approval order): Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland and Argentina. In addition, we can include Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, Columbia district (Washington D. C.) and New York in the United States, Mexico D. F. in Mexico and Alagoas in Brazil.

“These people who are making a big deal out of gay marriage? I don’t give a fuck about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We’re making a big deal out of things we shouldn’t be making a deal out of. They go on and on with all this bullshit about ‘sanctity’ — don’t give me that sanctity crap! Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want. I was an Eisenhower Republican when I started out at 21, because he promised to get us out of the Korean War. And over the years, I realized there was a Republican philosophy that I liked. And then they lost it. And libertarians had more of it. Because what I really believe is, let’s spend a little more time leaving everybody alone.”
Clint Eastwood in an interview for GQ magazine.

Congratulations Alex and Günther. You are married, as one understands marriage.

Gracias.

¿Injusto o no?

Sergey vs. Saint Petersburg

I am typing this brief entry after I received an email from a friend. He is a lawyer and he got it from Sergey, a Russian colleague.

A new law in Saint Petersburg fines anyone who shows support to the LGBT community. This law wants to spread to the rest of the country. In Russia, LGBT right seem to go backwards.

Sergey (a straight family father) has been arrested and he will go to court on April 16th for holding a sign saying that the family of his lesbian friend is as normal as his own. To support Sergey, everyone who sympathises whit the LGBT community and the community itself, please sign here and help to spread the word. Thank you. You will do it through All Out, a website in which I am registered. Sergey is for real (on the photo) and he will be judged on April 16th 2012. I am not asking you for money on a letter for an anonymous kid in a poor country with a goat leg stuck in his head.

After posting this entry, I think I could go to jail if I was in Russia. And you too for signing and showing your support to Sergey and the LGBTSupport  community. Is it unfair or what?

Paradójico, ¿no?

Beyond the hope

A couple of weeks ago I had a conversation which put me in my place in a fairly painful way. It was nothing devastating but I had hopes for something different. No expectations, but hopes... Are they the same? No, they are not, not at all. Expectations tends to be something more realistic, or not. But at least it is based on a premise that aims for reality. It is something that you build basing on the analysis of a situation, trying to anticipate a certain development or result. For example, if you work hard and earn money, your expectations are to become rich one day. Hope, however, is something more naive where you put less from your side. It is an emotional state with a desire on the background rather than a goal. For example, if you play lottery, you hope to become rich one day.

To have hope is something that needs nothing. In fact, you just need to have nothing else (we live in hope or, as we say in Spanish "hope is the last thing you lose") or to be blind or blocked enough -not literally- not to see further than the end of your nose. No wonder why it is one of the three theological virtues of Christianity: faith, hope and charity. That is to say, believe everything we say, wait and see what your god decides for you and give us the crumbs you eat so we will share them out. It is just an example, I don't really feel today like bitching about the Church in this entry.

A week later though, a hard week, I had another conversation which has made me think. It has taught me that not having those hopes I had is not bad. On the contrary, it is liberating. It is terrible not to have hope, it is more difficult to be happy, but at the same time it makes you free, so you are happier. Paradoxical, isn't it? They are two different types of happiness and I prefer the second one. Hope narcotises will. It leaves everything in the hands of chance, other people or a god. It keeps you away from the events, just wondering what might come and wishing it to be as good as possible, or not too bad at least.

I tend to be a flexible person who likes to make things easy for others, without many demands. I tend to not to know what I want and to care about what others want. I tend to have hopes in things happening in a certain way, and if that doesn't happen then I adapt to it. I tend to adapt to the world. From now on, I want to make an effort to do the opposite, to look for what I really want, regardless the time it takes me to find out. I want to think more about me and see what emotions I've got inside, because I pay less attention to my emotions than to my thoughts, less than I should. I want to follow my path until I find someone who walks at the same pace rather than try to catch up with someone. I want to make the world tends to adapt to me. If I want something, I want it all, I want it now; I go there and take it.

History repeats

This is not the first time that I type an entry from a train heading toBerlin. I haven't been there since Easter last year and I'm going back, though they will hardly be three days. The reasons why I type from the train are the same as last year's too: lack of time in other moments. And that's again brought by the fact that I am having so much fun lately. After the days that I spent sick in Vitoria, I have spent a weekend in Cologne (it's so close to Frankfurt...), I flew from there to London and Oxford (awesome time and weather -see the photo!!), another weekend in Cologne on my way back, hardly three more days in Frankfurt to do the laundry (and work) and again a ticket in my hand and a bag on my back.

The parties that they prepare in Berlin for these dates have just nothing to compare to others, and it's something that I don't feel like missing if I have the chance to go. In fact, I had other plans but I had to cancel them and so I can make it here. Other times I have had at least the decency to visit some good friends, ex-colleagues from Oxford. But I am a lost cause and this time I throw myself directly on the dance floor, from there to the bed, again on the dance floor, some hours of sleeping and then the train back to Frankfurt. I will still have one day to fix myself, relax, rest and be again a person. However, I know that that will take more than one day... (I'm very macho to party like an animal but then a total puff to recover -that's what being a masculine gay involves, you get the worst from both sides.)

I think that the coming months I will have to stay at home to save a bit... and get again a ticket in my hand and a bag on my back.

Disappointment

My latest visit to Vitoria has been a complete failure. It's dived into the sadness, so close to the dramatic and grotesque. I've spent 4 shitty days in which only good things happened thanks to the company of my family, specially the youngest members of it, my nephews and niece. But as for the rest, it would have been better to remain at home, in Frankfurt (yes, "home" is Frankfurt now, definitely). I took the flight on Wednesday already sick, quite sick, with fever, headache, throat infection and (surprise surprise!) an ear infection that I discovered when I started to feel that my left ear was going to blow as soon as we started preparing to descent for landing. The only positive thing is that it took only 20 to 25 minutes. I was feeling so bad that I went straight to the doctor at the airport while my poor sister was waiting outside in the car wondering where I was if the flight was already landed and I had no baggage to check-in.

That very same afternoon I couldn't speak, eat, not even sleep. Perfect. Right what I never do when I go to Spain, you know? I couldn't go out to the street for a walk and see MY city, nor watch TV and of course was not able to meet any friend. I was like that until Saturday afternoon, when at least I went out a bit. I can't complain about the sunny and warm weather I had, perfect to walk on the old medieval town, where the monthly market was taking place (and I am so much into street-markets). I could attend the birthday party of my nephew in the evening, the main purpose of the journey. And on Sunday afternoon it was time to come back the Frankfurt after such a frustrating mini-vacation. On Saturday, by the way, it was the fifth anniversary since I left Vitoria without knowing that I would not go back. But that's another story; almost another life already.

(Me harás feliz si vuelves.)"

Double-edged sword

"If you want to know if someone loves you, set him free. If he comes back, then you will know he loves you. If he doesn't come back, then maybe he never did it." A similar statement was written in almost every notes folder and academic agendas in the secondary school, right in the middle of the adolescence. That age boiling with unbalanced states, contrasts, discoveries, emotions on edge, mountains made out of a molehill, and that I am not yet sure whether I have got over or if I will do it one day. A silly sentence apparently which I think it is at least partly true.

When there are no rules or regulations, people have complete freedom. However, the freedom that each of us have is difficult to measure, because one's freedom tend to finish where the other one's start if you don't consider the rest of the people. In a world without rules is where you can really see who is worthy and who is not; who respects you because wants to respect you or who does it because he is not free to not to do it.

Freedom is an undefined and abstract concept/power/gift/right which involves responsibility towards the others. Set one person free to let him go and see if he comes back to you is very risky, but you can get an awesome reward in exchange. You run with the risk of not seeing that person again any more, but there is no choice for me. Restrict someone's freedom and force him to stay next to you is like killing his essence, a sign of insecurity and, on top of that, terribly daring, energy, patience and time consuming. Either people decide to stay next to me or I rather don't have them nearby. "You are free to go. (You will make me happy if you come back.)"

2011 in golden letters

This year I run out of time. I usually like to type a first entry with a review of the previous year. But this time, my birthday has arrived (the fortieth day of the year) and I haven't done it yet. I think I am going to quit saying that I will write more often from now on, because I've been saying so for years and I write less every time. Having a look at the blog's archives is enough to see that. The truth is that every time I do less interesting things, or things that I am less interested in telling. There are less novelties as before, when every little event was unique; I have a very active routine and there is less time left to stop and think, not to mention write. The average of entries per month decreases but that doesn't necessarily mean anything wrong. Things are fine and this entry is the proof of it.

Last year was awesome, fucking awesome. I have definitely settled down on this city and this country, I have kept meeting more people even more interesting if that was possible, I have done hundreds of things non-stop, my trips, free time, laughter, parties, friends, raw pure happiness. The inner well being feeling has been permanently there, often going up to euphoria. I am going to keep many good memories from 2011.

And 2012 has started, quite well though quieter so far. It was time to stop a bit (well, if we can call "stop" to the weekends I spend in Cologne, the three days I spent in Paris with a friend and my sister, the days I will be in soon in Vitoria and other plans I am already making). I am disappointed because I should already be able to speak a bit more of German at this stage, but the few efforts I have done haven't been very useful. So that is my resolution for this year: to learn more German. To achieve that, I will have to scratch bits of time from everywhere so, to start that, I have cancelled my membership of the basketball team at least until September. I will still go from time to time... But not in a regular basis as I used to do before. I also want to keep participating in the tournaments, and in a month and a half I hope to go back to Düsseldorf. I need to focus on learning -online at the moment- and on relaxing more too, because last year I had a couple of bad weeks due to a fast pace of life (infections, sickness, tiredness, low defences).

In any case, 2012 starts with some uncertainty and I will see if things can get better than in 2011 or if something happens and fucks up everything. For the time being, I will keep enjoying as usual...

I am an otter

In this LGBT world and culture, there are certain things that catch my attention and make me smile. One of them is that about bears and other individuals, or whatever they are. The bears are men more or less big, stocky, more or less hairy, usually mature (over 40), normally with some facial hair and some overweight or muscle. These features are not very strict conditions though: one can be a bear without being fat or well built, without facial or body hair. But those are usually the most characteristic features of a bear (oh well, the name says it all, doesn't it?).

However, although I include myself in this ursine community, I lack some things to be properly a bear. That's not a problem! Don't panic! There is enough for everyone. There are labels and all kind of animals within the group so everyone can fit. Depending on your physical appearance you can be: a cub, if you are still a young bear under 35-40 more or less; an otter, if you are slim and hairy and that's what I am (they say); a polar bear, if you are big and you have practically only white hair; a silver fox, if you have grey hair and are slim or with athletic built; a wolf, if you are furry and athletic; a bull, if you are muscled and thick; etc. And if you are none of these but still feel like being part of the community, then you are a chaser.

We normally have something in common: we are the gay anti-stereotype. Bears have (though not always) a naturally masculine behaviour. Most of us would never make you suspect that we are as gay as pink fluffy sleepers. This is good for those who want to hide their homosexuality, but a bit uncomfortable sometimes for those who don't. Sometimes you need to take someone, make him sit down in front of you and insist that you are homosexual even though you don't look like it (as if we homosexuals looked alike for the fact of being so...). Anyway, many times this leads to funny anecdotes, like it happened to me with some colleagues who wouldn't realise that there was no irony in some comments, but they are true. That if I play in a gay basketball team is not by chance. Another thing that they have in common is their sympathy and friendly approach despite the ferocious looks. The ursine community is very sociable. They are, after all, like teddy bears.

They say that "confess" that you like bears is like coming out of the closet for the second time. People can understand that you are homosexual and you like guys; there are many cute guys out there. But it is harder to believe that you'd prefer an affair with Richard Karn (for example) than with the glamorous David Beckham (I'm not saying that he's ugly, but not my type). I have felt most comfortable and identified among bears within the LGBT community. Like other sub-groups, we have our own flag, our specifically bears' bars, our parties, T-shirts, logos, art, comics, magazines, films (in Spanish and English), music (also in Spanish and English), internet series (a CSI parody filmed in Manchester for example), "beauty" pageants and other stuff about this topic including porn, of course. That doesn't mean that you have to like all these things just because it is for bears, but it is there. In fact, I feel sometimes a bit embarrassed for some things, but they all aim to have fun.

There is a sentence by my friend Ana, so philosopher, which perfectly sums up the spirit: "Bears' world is fascinating... You are young until you are 40, you don't have to wax, you don't have to shave, you can eat everything you want because it is ok to have a belly, with some simple jeans and a lumberjack shirt you look already great... I want to be a bear!".

¡No pasa nada!

Christmas 2011

This year for the first time, and probably not the last, I will spend the Christmas time away from home. I already spent in Frankfurt Christmas eve last year and flew to Vitoria on Christmas day. This time, I am staying for work in Frankfurt. It is unusual that we have to stay, but this year they needed two people per team and, after discussing it with my colleagues, another one and me will remain here. The office will be quite empty and most of my friends will be gone, so I expect to have a quiet couple of weeks.

Well, I will be somehow busy after all. Given the fact that I am one of the few ones staying, I've happily accepted to do some favours I've been asked for. I have to feed four pets and collect the mail of three people. Fortunately, three of the animals live in the same flat and I like pets in general. I will also seize on the opportunity to go to the gym more often than usual and have a look at some online German courses. I haven't been very satisfied with what I've done recently because it went slower than I expected. It's not that I can learn much faster... but I am sure that I can learn the same in many less hours if I try to learn on my own.

They've invited me for Christmas eve to have dinner at a friend's place. I do not yet know what I will do for New Year's eve. A friend from work will be already back and I will probably go out even though I am not very sure if I really want to party like crazy having to go to work on Monday... On Friday 6th we don't have to work in my company so I may try to do a trip somewhere, although I have to check my bank account before I make a decision. I can't afford many expenses right now:

And so that's the way I will spend the end of this year and beginning of the next one. Apart of the little sadness for missing my little nephews and niece, I will stay here happy. This way, I will have more freedom to take the holidays for the next year. I hope it is, at least, as good as this one.

Navidades 2011

No me puedo permitir mucho gasto ahora.

The "Claire Bennet spirit"

My friends Iñaki and Ana and me have a "role model" in our lives with regards to dating guys. Ana explained us that she and her sister thought first about this idea, and the two of us liked it immediately so much that we made it also our own. We are so much into these kind of ideas... I am talking about the "Claire Bennet spirit". Have you ever watched the tv series "Heroes"? Claire Bennet was the teenager cheerleader. She was blonde, very cute, apparently fragile but indestructible in reality. Whenever she got wounded, she would heal immediately.

On the first episode, there is a scene where Claire asks a friend to film her with a camera. She climbs up a kind of bridge like 80 feet high and jumps off from the structure, smashing her body against the floor. Then she stands up in one piece, puts her arm back in her shoulder, perrrrfect cheerleader, diiiiiiiva divine to die for, looks at the camera and says something like: "This is Claire Bennet and that was thump 1000th. Here I go for the 1001st", or something like that. Well, it may have been slightly adapted to our ideal by our twisted minds but it is more or less what she says, you get the idea, don't you?

So these are my friends and me: thump after thump, smashing ourselves against the ground, once and again and again and again. But indestructible, ready and willing to take the 1001st thump if necessary. The bad thing is not to get wounded, as wounds heal like Claire Bennet's. The bad thing would be if they didn't heal. Sometimes they take longer, some other times shorter... but it is always better when you have someone to help to clean them.
