Too much?

My weeks keep being just as busy as I described on the previous entry, or even more. That can be only a synonym of fun. It is an excellent sign! I still "owe you" some photos from my trips to Milan, Düsseldorf and Saarbrücken (well, I didn't take photos there), but there are more to come already! I don't know if I am doing wrong though... I was supposed to hold myself back a bit during the first months of the year in order to have a good summer and travel a bit then. However, that is exactly what I am doing now and I am spending all the money, so I don't know if I will be able to travel later. Besides, the rent is not expensive, ok, but living right in the city centre of the financial capital of the Eurozone is not cheap either... And I am definitely not planning to move from there. Quoting my wise friend Ana: "Rafa, You are right were you have to be. There is nothing sadder than a gay in the outskirts", haha! The first consequence is that I am not going to get that card I mentioned on the previous entry to get 50% discounts on the German trains, for two reasons: it is a lot of money to spend in one go (although it could be convenient in the longer term, but you never know), and not having the discount will prevent me from travelling more than I can actually afford. It is cheap to make unrealistic plans and marks on a map, but... I will still probably keep the one I have now, which is cheaper and I also get some discounts but not as much as with the other.

The latest destinations have been three. Each of these trips would really deserve a whole entry. But I am sorry, this is all I can do at the moment and I have no choice but to squeeze them on one single entry. Some weeks ago I went to Düsseldorf to meet some relatives and then head all together to a town near Dortmund called Schwerte. They have there some German relatives. I already visited this place in early 2003 for a week or so, but this time the reason to go was a special birthday party. The event was superb and not only the people was lovely, but also the place, the food and the party itself. I was very honoured to have been invited to such a familiar thing. It is a real pity that I do not find the time to learn some good German, and very embarrassing when after one year in this country (by the way, time flies and I can't even find a minute to stop and think about it) I still have to say that I don't understand the language... I also had the chance to walk a bit in Düsseldorf for some hours and see some nice areas.

Last weekend I went back to this city, although I did not have time to see anything as the reasons were very different: sports and party! I attended a gay basketball tournament. The experience was great and I am looking forward to repeating. The tournament was part of a bigger multisports event called the Düssel Cup. Sometimes, some cities organise this kind of events and there are more to come in Paris, Bologna, Barcelona, the Eurogames in Rotterdam... Even in Frankfurt in December, although last year there was not basketball competition. We will see if I can make it to some of these... The FVV team (my team) was actually made of patches. I only knew 3 of the other 7 guys (we were 8 finally). Two of them came from Barcelona, they registered as individuals and then they can play with any team that may need players (we were initially only 6). There was another one who lives in Düssedlorf and he has played with FVV sometimes and then the fourth one was a guy from Frankfurt but we had seen each other only once on the trainings, the Monday before actually... In the end, it was a rather international team: 2 Spaniards, 2 Germans, 1 Slovakian, 1 Croatian, 1 Venezuelan and 1 Mongolian! We didn't do it that bad although the final position was not very good. But I think it was good for people who had never played together as a team. The level was excellent, better than expected! They are good playing basketball these faggots, haha! There were some tough games and some very serious teams. The event included, as usual, a great party at night, which was very good fun until 4:30am. I enjoyed a lot partying with my team mates and specially the two guys who came from Barcelona.

And finally, I am right now as I type these lines (although I will see when I can post them) on the train heading to Berlin again. I am going to spend there 4 days to visit some friends and ex-colleagues from Oxford. That will have to come on another entry in the next few weeks. However, it is not the latest trip I have planned so far, as I already have booked tickets to Manchester in early June. I am really looking forward to that too! I haven't been there since I came back from Bahrain.

I don't know if someone can ever have too much fun. If that is possible, then I think I am doing it these weeks. Well, in fact, since this year started. Well, the ground was getting ready already since late last year... Anyway, you may get your stomach full of water or food, and so you can said you had too much. You can get drunk after some Jägermeister, and say that you had too much. You may get a headache after you have studied or watched TV or listened to someone for long hours, and say that it was too much. But I think that in fun, happiness, enjoyment and such things, you can never say that it was too much... And you always want more!

¿Demasiado?

Puedo incluso ir a París, Amsterdam, Zúrich, Viena...

Vicious circle

I am doing lots of things that have to tell on the blog. But I do not have time, because I have lots of things to do. And so I have to tell these things I am doing, but then again I do not have time. And so on... I am busy most evenings on weekdays and almost every weekend too. I go to the gym often, I keep playing basketball, I meet friends and colleagues, I am doing some trips and journeys and I have things to do at home the little free time that these activities left me. I am having hectic months since I came back from Christmas and the thing is that I am enjoying a lot. I like to feel this slight stress. However, something has had to happen to make me stop for a few days and force me to be quiet at home. Nothing too bad or too painful... or at least not yet while the anaesthesia is still working... This morning I went to the dentist to get two wisdom teeth taken out. They were already out and I just did it out of precaution, so it was rather quick. I think it didn't take more than 90 seconds or maybe 2 minutes to do it: unbelievable.

The thing is that, as I said, this will keep me quiet at home for a couple of days at least. I have been moving a bit around in the last few weeks and have more plans in mind (and tickets already booked). I have been for a weekend to Saarbrücken, which is not great but it was ok. I went to visit a very interesting UNESCO World Heritage site nearby, really impressive. I have also spent a few days in Milan visiting lots of friends, it was great! I will post some photos soonish...

Next month I am off to Düsseldorf for one night and then to a town near Dortmund to meet some relatives who are coming to that part of the country. In April I will be back in Düsseldorf for a few days to play a basketball tournament with teams from other parts of Europe. They have told me that this tournament is organised every year but it is not very big, so there may be up to 10 teams or so. And then I will also go to Berlin again to meet some friends and visit the endless city, so interesting!

Last, not not least, I am going back to Manchester in June, and I am really looking forward to that. I am going with a friend from work to visit Ray, a very good friend I left there. I also have to sort out some pending stuff with my address at the bank and my correspondence and blah blah. I will try to visit something else and maybe go one day to Sheffield, Blackpool or Liverpool. We will see...

But the best is still to come! I am going to get a Bahncard50 by the end of this month. That means that I pay an amount of money to get it (about 220€ I think) and then I have a 50% discount in all national trains for a whole year!! I can even go to Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich, Vienna... So I hope to have an interesting summer too. Needless to say that my savings are down to 0... But I am having fun and enjoying life non-stop now that I can.

Thankfully, things at the office are quiet and it is not very stressful. On the contrary. That is not very good either, because who knows when they don't need me anymore... Things are not 100% safe on that side but I prefer not to live with the fear; I rather enjoy the moment and hope for the best. Oh, and by the way, I almost forgot that I have already turned 30!

Past-present-future

A bit more than one year ago my friend Nestor sent me an e-mail as true as shocking for me. Something that made me react and see things definitely from a different point of view. His conclusion was quite wise; something like: if 2009 was shit, then you have more reasons to be optimistic and expect a better 2010. And he was right, the old bastard... Last year was quite a good one, I must say.

I wonder now if the fact that it has been the year that I have spent abroad the longest time has an influence in that... I left my home-city in January and I practically didn't go back in one year. The changes I have seen this time have been quite noticeable to me, I mean internally. I guess it is normal and it was predictable, but still it feels strange to feel strange "at home" with "your people". The uprooting process is getting more obvious than ever and it seems unstoppable, like a disease.

For the first time I have felt that I have been to places and specially that I have been with some people who are already part of my past, not my present any more. Of course I am not talking about everybody as many the persons and places I have left there are still very (VERY) present in my life. But during the days I spent there for Christmas, I have found myself in front of people with whom I didn't know what to talk about or, even worse, I have felt uncomfortable talking with people who used to be very close to me and, as I say, I have felt them like part of my past. That is what losing contact involves: they are still nice people, they are still funny, kind, interesting... but so can my neighbours be, or the butcher, or the baker, or the bus driver, and they are not close to me, and I don't feel like chatting about personal things with them. I remember a friend said once something like (and I may have already mentioned at some point on this blog): "When you are very close to someone and don't see him for 2 weeks, you've got a lot of things to tell him. But when you lose contact for a year, there is nothing to talk about". I totally agree. If the contact is lost, then it is lost and you can do nothing to recover over a coffee or a meal what has been missing for one year. It feels artificial and feigned.

Looking towards the path ahead, I can only be optimistic though, leave behind what/who is behind and make the most of the sweet moment I am living right now. The prospects for this year are quite good: already settled in this new stretch, with an increasing network of nice friends, plans for some trips and hopefully longer journeys, integrated in the job, the office, the company, the city and the country (well, as integrated as you can be without speaking the language), with time to play basketball and go to the gym to avoid the joints getting rusty and having a feeling of overall well-being.

Future is ahead, it looks tasty and I am hungry.

Pasado-presente-futuro

25 dic 2010

¡Vienes, voy, vas, vengo!

You come, I go, you go, I'm coming!

There has been a lot of movement in the last few weeks, specially on weekends. Always for good things as I have had some visitors and I have been myself away too. First I had my friend Ray from Manchester coming to visit. It was great to see him again! He was so helpful when I needed it during my stay in that city... I missed his typically Mancunian accent as well as his hilarious sense of humour. Plus it was good fun taking him to the coolest places (I could think about) in Frankfurt.

After Ray's visit, it was me who went to the UK briefly, just for a short weekend which turned out to be longer than expected... The weekend started in Oxford actually! As I arrived to the airport on Friday night, I went straight to the town which has been home for over two years. I spent the night there at my great friend Nico's. It was soooo good to see and catch up with him again. I miss him a lot. And then the morning after I met my ex-flatmate in Manchester, Jeremy, who is now living in Oxford again (he studied there) and actually just 5 minutes walking from where I used to live. It was also very nice to see him and have a tea and a long walk. He is a unique character. And then, in those non-stop 24h of highlight after highlight, I met my friend Javier and his lovely wife and also my friend Vicky. I hadn't seen Javier since November 2009 when we came back from Bahrain. It was awesome to remember “the good old times” and have some laughter over a warm coffee and a piece of cake. After Oxford, I went to London for the rest of the weekend and I stayed, as always, at my good friend Brendan's. I also met a friend of him, with whom I got on really well as we have so many things and tastes in common: clubs, music, guys, food, clothes... I actually ended up spending more time with him clubbing and shopping (my two main objectives for this trip) than with Brendan, hahaha. And on Monday evening, when I was ready to say “good-bye UK, hope to see you soon again”, I received an unexpected new at the airport: the flight to Frankfurt had been cancelled and there were no new flights until the day after!! Oh well, at least the company put me in a good hotel, paid for my transport and meals and it was just a matter of relaxing and waiting...

And last but not least, the first weekend of December I had one of the most eagerly awaited visits: my sisters Laura and Beatriz with my nephews Endika and Toni and also one of my brothers-in-law. It was great fun to have them around and to do things with them: the Christmas market, the Zoo, window-shopping... This is the third time some relatives come to visit me after my third sister, María, and my cousin Juan when I was in Oxford.

And now again, it is me the one who is at the airport to take a flight -weather permitting- to go back home for Christmas. I am happy to spend there about 10 days surrounded by friends and family. Time to go back to my roots and remember again who I was and who/what carved my first 25 years of life.

The rainbow sheep of the family

It's been already more than two years since I declared myself bisexual. In fact, it's been three since I started considering to feel attracted to other men; I tried it, I didn't dislike it and I decided to keep exploring this path. I have been for some time playing in both teams, but I haven't felt totally comfortable. To be bisexual has turned out to be something vague, indefinable, something that oscillates too much to me. And after that time, I have seen myself more at ease in one team than in the other. It is difficult to explain just on a blog entry all that has happened in the last three years, but here I am trying.

When I started with
this I didn't know what I was going to find inside me. The truth is that nothing has changed regarding the rational aspects. There are no changes in the way I think or the way I am, my opinions or tastes about almost anything, except for the natural evolution that every human being experiences as the time goes by; nobody is the same now as three years ago... ¿or they are? However, regarding the instinctive aspects rather than the rational ones, the mind rather than the brain, my feelings rather than my thoughts, the possible changes were totally unknown... When I started with this I didn't know what I was going to find outside me either. I ignored the shape and content of that new environment ready to be explored, what or how it was going to be. It was time to get involved, diving rather than dipping my toe, in a new culture completely unknown. There was new vocabulary to learn, habits, places, events, problems, solutions, ideas, initiatives, codes and social behaviours... When I started with this I didn't know who I was going to find around me either. I didn't know anyone in the same situation as me nor someone who knew more things than myself. I knew that I had little or nothing in common with the openly homosexual people I see on the media: legends, stories, films, news, jokes and the classic mocking queer with his characteristic accent flapping his hands around like a windmill. Something that didn't fit me at all. I knew almost nothing about that group of people, how I was going to fit, who exactly they were...

I have learnt, and I am still learning. The people I am meeting around me and are in some way or another part of this experience, they are exceptional and they teach me something new everyday, even though they don't realise: Álex, Amaury, Brendan, Brian, Brian G., Dani, Dave, David, Edu, Hans Martin, Iain, Iñaki, Josep, Josu, Kile, Martyn, Matthias, Michael, Nicholas, Paul, Ray, Rick, Rubén, Steve... I have learnt, first hand, that being homosexual doesn't necessarily involve... anything. It doesn't involve anything! The LGBT community is as varied and has a range of different people and personalities as wide as that heterosexual people have, or even more. They (we) have nothing in common, except for something obvious. And I have found my place among them, and I fit in it. How could I not if it is just part of a society where I already had a place to fit? I am as gay as Elton John or Jodie Foster, no more nor less (did you not know that there are also homosexual Oscar awarded actors?). I have learnt that outside me things are much funnier and easier than before. Everything is new and I am free to do whatever I want, go wherever I want, think whatever I feel like thinking. There are no rules to stick to or templates to behave; just a part of the world which remained unknown so far and it is full of possibilities, culture and fun. And I am having a lot of fun exploring that part of the world, with all the good and bad things it has. But the most important thing I have learnt is what is inside me. I definitely think I feel more comfortable as far as the feelings are concerned, the irrational aspect, what you can not control. I think that that's the difference between a sexual option and the others: the fact that other people can awake certain feelings in you. Feelings that have to do with affection, different to friends, different to family. Yes, I still can appreciate beauty in a woman, of course. But I am not seeking to approach them in that way and I don't expect to do it in the future. I expect to meet one day a male companion for a lasting relationship instead. Therefore, that turns me into gay. A couple of years ago I stuck my head out and now I am coming out of the closet completely, explosively!

So here I am and here I go, giving my all like a Miss, like a colleague at work says (although he is more charming and the metaphor sounds better on him). Maybe due to my character prone to perfectionism, I prefer to be the perfect homosexual than just a mediocre bisexual.

He aprendido, y sigo aprendiendo. ¡No conlleva nada!

Some time ago I promised photos of Frankfurt. Well, I have been taking some throughout several weeks and I have finally decided to post them. Do you join me for a walk? I hope you enjoy them.

This building is the train station, where you arrive from the airport.

This is a shopping centre near my place with a funny shape, don't you think? It is a hole, literally.

La torre de la catedral.
The cathedral's tower.

Some houses on the city council house square. They look old but they have been rebuilt. The World War II devastated almost all the German cities.

¡Esperé unos minutos a ver quién era y salió Gorbachov!
This is the city council house. also rebuilt. Some weeks ago there was an expectant crowd waiting for someone to come out (some celebrity). I waited a few minutes to see who it was and Gorbachov came out!

The Main river flows along Frankfurt, which was the ford ("furt") francs used to cross. It is possible to sail on it and it flows into the Rhine a bit further.

The building of the old opera was closed until a few years ago, when they refurbished and reopened it. Although it is elegant in the outside, it is a modern normal theatre inside.

This is a park that I used to cross every day to go to work and surrounds the city centre. It has the shape in plan of the former city walls. Parks in Frankfurt, even in the city centre, have lots rabbits.

Deutsche Bank headquarters. They are made of something like a mirror and they reflect the colour of the sky.

This is some sort of monument to the business men in a tie or something... And what about business women?

This tower was right next to where I used to live before. It reminds me a bit of the Statue of Liberty's crown.

Here I am, on top of the building where from I took the following photos.

Those towers are the European Central Bank's headquarters. They handle the whole of Europe's dough from here...

I have no idea about what those strangely shaped buildings are but they catch my attention. I live in that area.

Those dark towers on the left are again Deutsche Bank's headquarters. The tv tower is at the bottom.

Some more towers in the city. That one at the bottom with the shape of a pencil is the offices of the fair.

MY home, MY sweet home

I have final and totally settled in my new home. My name is on the mailbox, the intercom and I could not be happier. The last four weeks have been quite crazy though and almost chaotic, but I managed to cope with everything and it all worked out really well. I still will have to sort out some pending stuff but I should already have a normal life by the end of this month of October, the latest.

Things at work have been hectic and, when we already could see the light at the end of the tunnel, the fucking light went further revealing a longer tunnel. The overtime we have been working from Monday to Friday and even more long hours on Saturdays have absorbed lots of energy, mental resources and of course time. We were told that last Saturday was going to be the last day working overtime, but then we got the bad new: we will keep doing overtime until Wednesday. We all are SO looking forward to finish it... It is fine if we have to work, that's what we are paid for. But when everyone was making plans and expecting to get their evenings back after several weeks, then they told us that it was not yet over; bummer!! Well, hopefully Wednesday will be the last day, but we now prefer not to have expectations just in case this stretches until Saturday again... The positive aspect of the situation is that I really like working with my team. I adore my colleagues and I think we are an excellent group of people. They really make the difference when it comes to this job.

The little free time I have had, has been mostly spent buying furniture and stuff for my studio, putting it together and in the right places, cleaning and also receiving some visitors -no time for basketball or German lessons for four weeks. I have hosted a friend who needed to stay for a few nights as he had visitors himself at his place, then my friend Brendan from London for a long weekend and also had my ex-housemate from Oxford Annabelle and her friend Sabine. Both came for the book fair and it was so good to catch up with them!! They stayed at a hotel anyway. The studio has got its shape and now I will only need to add a few details, like something to put on the walls and maybe a few small plants (although I am really bad at taking care of plants and then I feel guilty if they die...). I am also looking forward to going to the flea market and see if I find cheap and cool stuff to decorate a bit. Unfortunately, it only takes place on Saturday morning and so I haven't been able to go during the overtime period. I've been here for two weeks already and I love it, both the place and living right in the city centre. The only bad thing is that I have spent lots of money that I had hardly earned, so I will have to be careful and try to save some in the next months. Oh! And another bad thing is that I won't have an internet connection until the end of this month, so be patient with e-mails and entries on the blog.

One of the highlights of my free time happened just last night. I went to see Epica for the third time in a different country: England, Spain and Germany. Ha ha!! They were performing yesterday in a town in Bavaria. I went along with a colleague by train. We really enjoyed the concert, they get better and better every time I see them! But then we missed the train for hardly 30 seconds. It was just starting to move when we put our feet on the platform, and it was the last one!! We had two options: either waiting and take the next one at almost 6am or take a taxi to Frankfurt. Well, we deserve to spend our money after working so hard. So, what the hell, we took a taxi and came back home safe and comfortably.

Now, the prospects for the next few months are just as good as the last six (because I've been here already for half a year!!). I expect to have some more visitors and I am really looking forward to early December, when some relatives will be coming, including my nephews. I am also planning some short trips to visit some friends in Germany, and the UK, the north of Italy, the south of France and some regions in Spain are always in mind as well. However, as I said, the big investment I had to do to start living here will prevent me from travelling for a long time. Besides, I would also like to enjoy some holidays far far away, in another continent, hopefully within the first six months of next year if everything keeps going as well as now...

Well, in short, things should take off again after the last crazy four weeks. I hope to have a routine of office, gym, German lesson and basketball soon with some trips, friends and visitors filling the free gaps. If the spring was good and the summer was great, the autumn starts with a radical turn of the situation and, unbelievably, it seems that it is going to be even better than the two previous seasons. I am ready and going for it.

With everything on my back

I can't find the time to sit down for a second and tell you about the last few weeks. I have been extremely busy and expect some more weeks just as busy. There are several reasons for it. Some are good like a visit of a friend that I had for a few days. Although I had not much time to show him the city around, he came with a different purpose so he kept busy himself. Then I spent four days in Berlin visiting another friend and ex-colleague from Oxford. I had some excellent days there, enjoying the city, the area where he lives, visiting some museums and a culture centre and attending to one of the main gay events in Europe. Then I have re-taken the basketball training and the German lessons after the summer break, which is good and I was already starting to miss both. But the main reasons why I am so busy are: work and flat-hunting.

Things at work are fine but we are working a lot in order to finish a huge project. There are still some more weeks and we will probably working long days until the last minute. The good new is that I've got a pay rise, although it is not related to working harder. It's something that has happened to everyone in my agency. The other new is that, as I said on the previous entry, we've moved to another office. It is pretty cool and I am working now on the 10th floor of a tower in a business district very close to the airport. The office has windows everywhere and so the daylight is always present. Besides, the views are really beautiful (the forest on one side, the city on the other) and we can see the planes approaching the airport to land every few minutes. We just hope they know well where to land because the fly really close to our building! The bad thing is the connections to the city: there are less options and it takes longer than from the previous office (so it is some time wasted every day just waiting for the train -and it is definitely too far away to walk).

The flat-hunting has been intense for a few days but eventually successful: I've got already my own place!! I got the keys last Tuesday and I have already started to bring stuff. I hope to move there by the end of this month (well, or as soon as I've got an internet connection there). It is right in the city centre, almost impossible to be more central. As many places in the centre of a medium-big city, it has three characteristics: small, expensive and noisy. What would you expect? But I love it. It's a tiny studio with separate kitchen and bathroom. I don't really mind the noise of the traffic; the only bad thing are the ambulances and police, which are noisier in this country than anywhere else I think. But that's also something that I had to suffer where I am at the moment, so I will survive... It is in excellent conditions and in a very neat building. Anyway, not only it took some time to find it, but now it comes the not-more-relaxing task of buying everything I need to live there: from a bed to the toilet paper. This is stressful obviously because I need to be careful with every euro I spend (I've had to pay a lot of money as a deposit and also to the agency who found it) and because I do not have time to check what the best deal is due to the overtime...

I am doing it slow by slow and I am so looking forward to both finish the project and settle in my new place. I will hopefully spend there a long time. Well, at least longer than in any of my previous places in the UK and the Persian Gulf. It's been good to move so much and see so many places but I am tired of packing, unpacking and carrying everything with me so often. This time I am staying if nothing too bad or too good happens.

¡¡No!!
