God bless Kölsch

I don't like much beer in general (how many times have I said this with an almost empty glass of beer in my hand?), but I started drinking some when I was in the UK and moving to Germany hasn't made me exactly drink more water. You go to a bar, don't feel like drinking anything strong, the "juices" are disgustingly artificial and overpriced, the fizzy drinks are just chemicals with carbonated water, the iced tea has more sugar than a candy shop and having a coffee or tea is not just like having one of those drinks. What's the alternative? Beer. No more expensive or unhealthier than the other options, but quite the opposite.

Still, I can count on one hand the number of beers I like. One of them is Kölsch, the traditional beer from Cologne. I like it because it is soft and easy to drink, not too tasty (the strong bitter taste is what I don't like about most beers). I can drink it almost like water, without realising it is an alcoholic drink after all. I also like it because the traditional way to serve it is in small and cheap glasses (usually 0.2l and 1.5€), which always feels like little and so you get another one, and another, and one more, and... by the time you realise, you have lost the count of how many you have drunk. Of course, bartenders are always around offering more and more in some sort of special baskets to carry the glasses, making it easier to order a new one.

However, what I like the most about Kölsch, is the nice time I share with my friends when I go to Cologne. Drinking Kölsch is a good sign: it means that I am with people I love and people that make me feel well. It also means that I am in a city that I like more and more every time I visit. Kölsch is for me more than a beer, it is a symbol. Thanks guys for a great party weekend full of music, dancing, laughing, flirting, chatting, gossiping, friendship and good vibes!

Dios bendiga la Kölsch

No me gusta mucho la cerveza en general (¿cuántas veces he dicho esto ya con un vaso casi vacío en la mano?), pero empecé a beber algo cuando estaba en el Reino Unido y mudarme a Alemania no me ha hecho beber más agua exactamente. Vas a un bar, no te apetece tomar nada fuerte, los "zumos" son caros y dan asco de lo artificiales que son, las bebidas con burbujas son productos químicos con agua carbonatada, el té helado tiene más azúcar que una tienda de gominolas y tomarte un café o un té no es como tomar una bebida de estas. ¿Cuál es la alternativa? Cerveza. No es más cara ni insana que las otras opciones, más bien al contrario.

Aún así, puedo todavía contar con los dedos de una mano el número de cervezas que me gustan. Una de ellas es la Kölsch, la cerveza tradicional de Colonia. Me gusta porque es suave y se bebe fácil, no tiene demasiado sabor (el fuerte amargor es precisamente lo que no me gusta mucho de las otras cervezas). Me la puedo beber casi como el agua, sin darme cuenta de que es una bebida alcohólica al fin y al cabo. También me gusta porque la forma tradicional de servirla es en vasos pequeños y baratos (normalmente de 0,2l y 1,5€) que nunca parecen suficiente y te pides otro, y otro, otro más y... para cuando te das cuenta, ya has perdido la cuenta de los que llevas. Los camareros están siempre merodeando ofreciendo más y más con una especie de cestas para transportar los vasos, así que se hace muy fácil pedirte otra.

Sin embargo, lo que más me gusta de la Kölsch son los buenos ratos que comparto con mis amigos cuando voy a Colonia. Beber Kölsch es un buen síntoma: significa que estoy con gente a la que quiero y gente que me hace sentir bien. También significa que estoy en una ciudad que me gusta más cuanto más voy. Kölsch es para mí más que una cerveza, es un símbolo. ¡Muchas gracias chicos por un fin de semana de fiesta sin parar, música, bailoteo, risas, flirteo, conversaciones, cotilleo, amistad y buenas vibraciones!
