Ich bin stolz darauf, dass nach ein paar Jahren yURy nOas Kamera nochmal mich getroffen hat.

It makes me feel proud that, after a few years yURy nOa's camera has met me again.

Estoy orgulloso de que, después de unos años, la cámara de yURy nOa me haya visto de nuevo.

Hi, I am very delighted to have discovered your blog!

I am applying to Cologne Game Lab this year and have just recently received my tasks.

I've read through your posts and found that I am sharing a lot of feeling with what you've gone through.

I have a question for you if you don't mind: what kind of questions were you asked at the interview--were they personal, or technical?

Thanks,
Sam.

Hello Sam. Are you applying for the MA or the BA programme? In any case, the interview has not difference. The questions I was asked last year were about the projects of my applications, why I did that and where I got my inspiration from, as well as a short personal informal introduction. There was nothing technical and I'd say it's more to get to know you than to test you. If you get an invitation for the interview, you should fear nothing. That means that you impressed them and that's already a good thing. I wish you good luck with the application!

Look, after my admission, I wrote on this very same blog:

"In theory, the projects are more important, I think. Given the fact that both the Ma and the Ba are in English and they don't ask for any language certificate, the personal interview is more to check your real level. The interviews don't take long, just 10 minutes, enough to see if you can communicate and little else. Besides, the projects had to be different, but the interview seemed to be the same for both options, if they had enough with one for me..."

Hi Rafael,

I am applying for a Ba programme in informatics. Thank you for your encouragement and reply.

I've just read that there might be more than a thousand applicants, so I think the competition is gonna be tough.

Again very glad I found your blog--there's very little coverage for the English speaking audience regarding German universities outside of official videos, which are obviously biased.

No problem! The thousand candidates sound really a lot, but they may be adding BA and MA. Just do your best in the application project and wait for a response! What's the topic this year? Last year it was "06F" and two years ago "Lampedusa".

The BA is organised in a way that first year you spend time learning also some basic knowledge on the other two specialities, all together: informatics, arts and design. It's on the second year when people "separate" and do what they applied for. Your chances also depend on your speciality, as they try to keep it balanced. For example, if there are a lot of artists applying, their competition is tougher.

Good luck!

Hi again Rafael,

Thanks for the info.

This year's topic is to outline a game concept on "Empathy". It's kind of difficult, as every time I come up with some concept, the next day is think, "Nah, I would not play it, why would others be interested?"

The problem for me is not to come up with a game concept, but to connect it to 'empathy'. The only great game that reminds me of empathy is The Walking Dead.

What is the average age of the student there, if you don't mind? I am 22.

Cheers

I suggest trying to think about a game where the main character (or main object if you want to do it abstract and without people) goes through some problematic situation and the gameplay will make the player feel some empathy.

Great one, thank you very much.

Hope I meet you at the university to personally say thanks.(if that's not too creepy)

Cheers,
Sam

CGL is quite small and I'm very tall and easy to spot. So say hi if you are around ;-) Good luck!
