Despertando.

Además, no puedo hacerlo incluso si quisiera.

Waking up. Frankfurt am Main 1.0

Mental peace seems to be coming back to my head, slowly. It is like waking up from an uncomfortable dream. Not a nightmare, but not a quiet night either. You know you are conscious, but you keep your eyes closed. The dawn is somewhere out there, not yet bothering you. Then you open your eyes slowly but it is still dark and you are still enjoying the comfortable feel of the warm sheets thanks to the heat your own body gives. You don't want to move, you feel so good after a bad night... You realise that the time is running out and the immediate future is still unknown: there are things to do and the day could go wrong for so many reasons... You wonder what the weather will be like, for example. The bad time is gone but there is no guarantee that the one ahead will be better, so you just try to enjoy the minutes of relief and comfort between one thing and the other. You haven't rested during the hours you were supposed to and the day won't give you another break so you just try to make the most of this treasure with the shape of a bed and a pillow. However, you know that this is just a brief hiatus between the night and the day. The wonderful time we all have between waking up and getting up.

I am getting up soon. Although I am still far from achieving my medium-term goals, I must report that everything is going very well after one month since I woke up here in my new city. These four weeks have run smoothly and I have had time to rest and tidy up my head a bit. The job seems to be ok, I like the office and my desk. My colleagues seem to be very approachable and funny people, excellent to work with. The very few places of the city I have seen are of my taste and even the weather has been quite good especially the last spring-like days. I have also already found a place where to live and I will move there on Saturday: that will be the moment when everything will really start; when I jump out of bed hoping to land in my sleepers to have a good beginning of the day.

The hiatus has been nice but staying in bed, lazy, will not help much. Besides, I can not do that even if I wanted to. It is about time to get up, roll the blind up, open the window and have a good breakfast while I think what I have to do the next few days/weeks. There are many things to set up. The time gone has been so good and everything has been so easy so far that there is only room for optimism. I hope this is one of the best days of my life.

I don't care / Qué más me da
if I am different to them. / si soy distinta a ellos
I don't belong to anybody. / No soy de nadie.

I know they criticise me, / Yo sé que me critican,
I'm sure that they hate me. / me consta que me odian.
They are eaten up with jealous. / La envidia le corroe.

Why is that? / ¿Por qué será?
It is not my fault. / Yo no tengo la culpa.
My circumstances insult them! / ¡Mi circunstancia les insulta!

My fate is the one I decide, / Mi destino es el que yo decido,
the one I choose for me. / el que yo elijo para mí.
Who cares about what I do?
Who cares about what I say?
I'm like this and will keep like this.

Como estaba diciendo, en los últimos años, me doy cuenta que he hecho tantas cosas por primera vez, he probado tantas otras cosas, he comido, he degustado, he escuchado, he visto, he sentido, he conocido gente por primera vez...

The umpteenth first time

I am pleased to look back and see what I've done in the last few years. I haven't had the chance to do it for a while since I was more worried about my present and my future. Now, I am only worried about my future, but my present seems to be safe at least for a while. Besides, there was not much distance between this near past and my current situation to get a nice perspective that allowed me to see things clearly and from a relatively external and objective point of view.

As I was saying, in the last few years, I realise I have done so many things for the first time, have tried so many other things, have eaten, have tasted, have listened, have seen, have felt, have met so many people for the first time... I think more than in the previous 10 years of my still young life. I have had first times in a new environment, a new job, with new people, in a new city, in a new country, with a new language... once and again. Hence the title of this entry: I am kind of getting used to do all these things I do for the first time, to my new surroundings, to a different way of understanding life, to finding a place to call home, to live with strange people (at first).

I must admit that it is still an interesting and obviously enriching experience, enjoyable, but this time I am not taking it as enthusiastically as the last few times. Maybe because I look at the mirror and I see that I am a bit tired and need time to recover and enjoy the 'old new' experience to the full. Maybe because I don't get that surprised any more when I see things I am not used to. Maybe because I am already used to see things I am not used to, if one can get used to this. Maybe because this is not the biggest change I have experienced since I am jolting across the planet. Maybe because I feel more and more at ease wherever I go, whatever I do and whoever I am with. Maybe...

So, coming back to this side of the mirror, the first week in Frankfurt has been fine. So has the first week in this flat, the first week at work, etc. I am staying with a colleague for one month as a temporary solution until I find my own place. I am not doing much the days I have had off before starting working and now that it's Easter. I have the
same feeling as I had in Manchester: I don't feel like going out and exploring the city where I am going to live. I prefer to discover it by living and being part of it. I am not motivated by the feeling of seeing it as a traveller, but as a citizen. I am happy and keen to settle in to start really enjoying life here. Fortunately or not, I haven't settled in too many places in the last few years to get used to and not to enjoy it to the full.
