Poco tiempo

Little time

Between one thing and another I don't have much time to write and relax. The last two weeks have been plenty of things to do and I still have more things that will keep me busy for the next month or so. First of all, my three days in Wales were really pleasant, despite the fact I went there for work. My colleague and me were working in a small town called Llantrisant, quite beautiful. It was nice to work with him and also look for places were to have dinner (funy). We were at two different places, the second of which was really good and beautiful. The motel reminded me one of those motels of Tarantino's films (have you ever watched "From dusk till dawn"?).

My birthday's weekend was also very good and busy. I went to have lunch with Torstein and some other spanish people as I usually do on saturdays. I came back home to listen a basketball game on the radio in internet and then I went to have dinner with some other friends. It was funny and good dinner although it took very long to find a restaurant with some table available (I didn't book anything as I didn't know it was going to be that hard to find a place on a saturday evening in Oxford). They gave me some gifts: a guide to be the perfect british, another one to swear in english and the film "Taxi driver", that I have already seen but I liked it a lot and don't want to change it). The sunday was peaceful and quiet day as I wanted to relax at home after the week out and before another week away in Woolwich. On sunday evening I invited my housemates for dinner.

On monday morning I went to Woolwich again. I've spent the week working alone but with the rest of the team of diggers from the company in the B&B. However, I have hardly been with them except for the breakfast. My room-mate was a silent person and not very sociable but clean, polite and nice enough to share room for 4 nights. The work at Woolwich was ok and I'll have now quite a lot data to keep working at the office for several weeks. I have to work hard because I should have finished some reports I'm still writing. My problem is that I'm afraid of not doing well and disappoint some people in the department and above. Every time I have a look at the reports I change something and I don't think it is correct yet. I don't even think it is better than before... But by the end of this week or next monday, I hope to finish two of them and then definitely finish the first I started (it's the largest building and also the worst report as it was the first I started writing in english so I have to change plenty of things I have learnt writing the two others because I'm more experienced now). In fact, I think I should have started by Buildings 15 and 16 and then do the 11 but I'm not the one who decides. All this planning may change as I'll go back probably some days to the manor house next to Henley-on-Thames where I was working some weeks ago.

Last monday I went to a chinese restaurant next to the hotel in Greenwich. It was nice and I decided to go back on thursday. However, I couldn't have dinner...
"Hello, I'd like to have dinner, please"
"Umm... How many of you?"
I looked at both sides and answered: "Well, only me I guess"
"Umm... Only you? One moment please" and the little chinese girl went into the kitchen and then came back: "Today not possible".
"Not possible? Why?" I had a look at the tables and half of them were available!
"Today only San Valentine's menu. Special for two persons, not only one. Would you like to take away?"
"What??? No, it's ok. I'll go, as single as I am, to the pub..."
And I ended eating a very nice pub food actually, but humiliated for being single.

On friday morning I received a message from Torstein: bop at Wolfson. I was really tired after the week and keen to have a hot shower and enjoy my warm bed, far from the freezing week we've had in Woolwich. But... what the hell, I went anyway. It was a San Valentine's special and before the bop they organised one of those silly contests where one guy and three gals stay at either side of a screen without seeing each other. The the guy asks spicy questions, the girls answer and he rules them out one by one till get his favourite. He asked some really funny questions like "What kind of meat do you like to eat?", "What's your favourite condom flavour?" or "How do you like to... ahem... trim your bush?". The girls' answers were really funny too but the sound was bad and I could hardly hear them as I was in a very bad place. Anyway, the party after the contest was one of the funniest I have been in the Wolfson although we were only 4 people: Torstein, Lidia from Valencia (Spain) and Dana from Latvia. I was so tired that I didn't stay till the end though.

Oh, by the way, I already have my own desk in the office. That's good as I had to beg a desk every week. From now I can leave all my stuff there. The computer is not very good and it has a Windows2000 but I'll speak to the people in IT to see if there is any possibility to install an XP as I'm more used to that. Well, that's all by the moment. I'll try to post some photos of Llantrisant, Woolwich and my desk within this week, ok?

To the Far West!

Hi visitor! After the imbalances the Peterborough issue caused, everything stabilizes and returns to normal. And it returns without time to think about anything but the job. It's all right. I'm very happy with my situation now. I keep working (as slow as always) on the reports of Buildings 11, 15 and 16 in Woolwich and they gave me already another two to do: I think they're 13 and 14... Or were they 12 and 13? Well, I'm not sure, I'll tell you later. I should take some photos so that you can see them, shouldn't I? Now that I have done plans for the next months in my life and I don't have to worry about that, my aim is to improve the blog posting more photos, to make it more amusing. Give me some time, ok?

Regarding to Woolwich, I learn more and more about the site and as architectonic compound is really interesting. I'll go back there next week to keep working on the five buildings and keep writing the reports of the first three. I won't touch the new two until I don't finish the other three because if I write 5 reports at the same time I'll get mad and I won't finish any of them. The problem is that I have a wide margin to improve so I learn one thousand new things every day. And when I read what I wrote two months ago I feel like changing it all. Thus, I'll finish the first three, give them as they are and then start with the other two. If there are a lot of things bad the project manager (Dave Score) will tell me what he wants me to change.

But before I go this monday to the Royal Arsenal, I first have a project running from tomorrow in Wales. I'm going to the Far West! Well, not so far. You know, and if you don't then I tell you now: Wales is a country to the West of England. Today my colleague from the department Simon came and told me that he had this pending stuff to do. And as it was more convenient for me to do it asap, we've decided that the best option was to start tomorrow. As quick as that. I'm going to a town called Llantrisant, very close to Cardiff, to record the ruins of the castle. I'll be there until friday.

Well, but I'm not only thinking about work. As I have more free time now than when I was digging, I'm thinking about doing something with it. There are a couple of persons in the company who are currently learning spanish with some friends. I offered myself to teach them and they agreed so we're starting after Easter (they still have a course which have paid for so we'll wait for them to finish and thus I have time to prepare the first lessons). I don't know how I'll manage, but they realize that I'm not a "real" teacher and seem to be pretty patient with me. In addition, the company will lend us a meeting-room to do the class there. That's great!

I also have been this week thinking about how to spend those holidays I have to spend before the 28th March (deadline) and I finally joined them with Easter in order to have a longer period. I already have bought the tickets to go back to Barcelona (finally, after one year and a half without going!). I'll be there just 4 days and then I'm going 6 to Vitoria to meet my second nephew, who will be born by mid March. I'm really keen to meet him! I hope to meet in Barcelona all my friends around and also Torstein, who will spend some weeks learning spanish and will be there at the same time. It will be very funny to meet him there.

This keeps my mind busy these days. By the way, it isn't yet one year since I came here and there are 3000 visits already. Thank you very much for your interest!

¡Al lejano Oeste!

¡Hola visitante!

Bueno, no tan lejos.

Carnival?

This weekend has been the Carnival, hasn't it? I haven't realized. I haven't seen anybody dressed up as anything. Well, on saturday afternoon I saw a couple of persons with fancy dresses of dog, cat, bear or something similar. But I didn't get if they were like that because of the carnival or because they were handing out some leaflets from a shop...

One person that did dress up was a friend of mine, but in his home city, not here. I post a photo he has sent me. He dressed up like José Luis Moreno thrashed (a famous person in Spain who has recently been attacked at his own home by some burglars), with his mafiosi from Eastern Europe included. This guy doesn't have any normal idea...

(See the photo posted on the entry below)

¿Carnavales?

Pues ni me he enterado. Aquí no he visto a nadie disfrazado de nada.

Trip to Peterborough

I jumped out of the bed on thursday 24th because I hardly could sleep thinking about my future. I kept thinking in the train: what will I do if I finally get the bursary? I made a decision in the train and I had no doubts, but if I hadn't two options finally there wouldn't be anything to decide. I arrived to Peterborough station, quite ugly, old and dirty by the way. I went to the cathedral and I got spaced out: the building is awesome and smashing (you can see the photos below if you click on them). Most of it is from the Norman Period, very plain but well illuminated, with unbelievable painted wooden roofs. And I was almost alone there. I bumped into Catherine of Aragon's grave, whose tomb I had no idea it was there. I spent a long time having a walk inside the building until I went to have lunch because the interview was at 14:00.

I arrived to the place and the five members of the panel introduced themselves. They asked me to explain something about former jobs (I brought my laptop for that) and then they started to ask me questions. I blocked speaking a lot at the beginning and words didn't come out. I got nervous because I could hardly explain my former experiences, what I think is exactly my strongest point. We spoke a lot about documents and databases and just a bit about buildings and surveying (what actually interests me) but I also had good moments. I went out a bit disappointed, not only for the way I started speaking but also for the kind of interview. Well, I know it was to do a GIS but I expected something different. However, I kept my hope intact.

After going out I spent another long time in the cathedral, taking plenty of photos and admiring all the details that would allow me to develop a different job I was supposed to do but much more interesting for me: plinths, cornices, stones' carves, builders' marks, mouldings, breaks, walled bays... "spoke" to me and revealed a challenging constructive history to be decoded. But in one afternoon I don't have time enough to decode 800 years of History so I came back to Oxford. I kept thinking in the train and reasserted the decision I made that morning.

It took very short to answer me and two days later I had a letter at home telling me that they wouldn't take my application further: I was discarded for the bursary. Well, they were other who finally made the decision for me. It didn't matter what I decided and reasserted in the train: there were no choices. I stay in Oxford for a longer period. It's a pitty I didn't get the bursary to be me who made the decision but the truth is that I'm really happy to stay in Oxford. And with a very clear idea in my head: if there's only one mother, there is still only one cathedral for me.

Excursión a Peterborugh

The dilemma

Things are going as I expected. January is being a very hectic month with plenty of things to do, to think and to enjoy. They're nearly two weeks since I came back to Oxford but it feels like I was in Vitoria years ago and I already miss all of them as much as I missed them before my visit. But that's normal I think and it doesn't affect me much because I keep my head busy with other stuff. As a friend said, enjoying a bit the own homesickness is not that bad but not immerse oneself in it (I hope she doesn't mind I post on the blog what she tells me by e-mail). She also said that in some way I take all of them with me wherever I go, and that is a great responsibility! I'll try not to take them too deep if I immerse again in something.

As I told you, there are a lot of things to think. I'm ok with the job but a bit delayed with Woolwich Arsenal's Building 11's report. Besides, I have started with those of Buildings 15 & 16 but I left them incomplete by the moment because I've started with another job more urgent (I don't have any deadline for those reports so they can wait). I'm working in a manor house now really beautiful doing an easy but a bit boring job. I'm going with a colleague and we get on better every day. I'm happy because the Buildings Department is giving me works to do and I think that that is a good signal. There may be some post for me soon, specially because from the end of February I'll be able to drive the company's cars and that will allow me to have more own projects. But it can also happens that they send me back to dig on site in a few weeks and the building's job is just a beautiful memory...

I'm every day better at home, really well. I love living with these people and I enjoy a lot their company and their conversations. They're a great support. Besides Toni is back, that guy who was some months ago. He'll be three weeks in the library, like the last time. The truth is that we don't use to see each other on weekdays but we have nice chats on weekends among muffins, milk and coffee talking about everything and everyone. And also he's member of the Wolfson College so we have plenty of friends in common. I learn a lot with only five minutes of conversation with him.

And talking about the Wolfson College, last friday we had a nice party there. I met people from all over the world again and even from countries that I hardly knew they existed (have you ever met someone from Kyrgyzstan?). We had dinner at an indian restaurant and directly to Wolfson from there. I've been meeting lately a lot of people here, mainly Torstein (Lars' second name) and other spanish people. I also meet the portuguese people from the company, Lis (a british archaeologist but that has lived in Hong-Kong until a few years ago) and Lucian (a very nice romanian computer technician). I use to go to have lunch, dinner, some drink...

So, my working life goes ok and it may improve, my home life goes very well and so does my social life. Everything is fine, everything is perfect to enjoy. But this thursday I have an interview for a bursary in Peterborough, another city far from Oxford, offered by the Cathedral and the IFA for one year. It seems to be very interesting to learn more about Buildings Archaeology (my field of study) and it is very well paid, much better than my current salary. Not only is a great opportunity but also it could be interesting to pack everything again and do a change of city to see a bit more of the country because it seems that I'm stuck in Oxford; to wake up again the nomad inside of me. Meet new people, new places... And it is much closer to the airports that take me back home. I'd have plenty of good things if I get it and I go there.

However, I'm not so sure if I will accept it in case they offer it to me. I haven't heard very good things about that city and I'll be limited by the one year term duration of the bursary in case I don't feel comfortable there (I can leave whenever I want now and I like to make plans for shorter terms). When I applied for it, my circumstances where different and I thought it would be a good option to spend 2008, but everything has improved a lot here and I'm not sure if, despite the money and the experience, I feel like changing of city again. Not only because every move is annoying but also because I don't feel like finishing my life in Oxford now that it's so good. I already aware that this is not forever and I'll have to leave some day, that's what I keep in mind at least. But I don't know if that moment should arrive now. The more I think, the more I realize that, the more comfortable I feel here, the more painful will be to leave in the future though...

I don't know yet if I'll get it and that on thursday I'll have just an interview, but the truth is that I think I have quite a lot of possibilities. Only the fact that they want to interview me is important because I presume a lot of people applied and they're going to interview only a few people on that day. In addition, they pay for all the train expenses and I don't think they did that if they had called many candidates. But as I said in a previous entry, I can't have roots and wings at the same time. I leave or I stay. And I have to think a lot about it now because, in the event I get it, they won't give me much time to think and I'd have to go there asap (that it'll be as soon as I finish the reports from Woolwich).

It's a big mess and I'm very confused. Everything has a lot of pros and very few cons. Every option is excellent. The point is: should I bet on a pleasant personal life and a good professional life but unstable or I bet on a professional life that can launch my career and a personal life that I have to start building from the beginning in a city where I don't know anyone? If they don't offer me that bursary and I don't have to make this decission that'll make it much lighter. But I'm going for it for my own pride, I want to get it, to be in the position of privilege of being able to choose between two excellent option and be me the one who finally decides. But, of course, your opinion is welcome. It's good to have others' help to make the decision so in case I make the wrong one, can always blame the others :o)

Salgo a comer, a cenar, a tomar algo...

O me quedo o me voy.

Loads of hugs, tons of smiles

I knew what was going to happen, and it's happening. At the beginning I didn't want to go back to Vitoria, my hometown, for Christmas, but I finally decided that it was going to be the best option. It's been great to meet again all my friends and relatives, in my favourite places of the city. For the last two weeks I've been with the people I like, doing what I like, eating, smelling, watching... I've enjoyed every single second I've spent there. But I knew it was going to be hard to leave all behind once again although I don't regret at all. A friend told me once that it would be great to be able to save all these good moments in a small flask and keep them for when I need them. Well, I'd need much more than a small flask to save all the hugs and smiles I've received these last days.

I feel like spend some calm days, thoughtful and getting used again to this lifestyle. The return to my house here has been pleasant and I feel like meeting again my friends in Oxford. Besides, the next weeks will bring some novelties which will keep my mind busy.

He disfrutado cada segundo que he pasado.
