Better three than none

It's been 5 months since I came to Berlin (8 years since I left Spain!) after 4.5 unforgettable years in Frankfurt am Main. I came here with two objectives: one was to learn German and the second one to think about my future in the mid-term, what to do after this sabbatical year, probably conditioning the rest of my life. Yes, I want to stay in Germany but I want to study again. And I don't mean just German, I mean proper higher education. For this purpose I have managed to save some money throughout the years since I started working back in 2004. That will put me back through uni.

I think I am doing well with the first objective. I am learning German and, although it is hard for me to see the difference day after day, I smile when I see the mistakes I was making last October. We repeated recently an exercise that we did a few months ago (I did really bad then) and this time it was surprisingly much better. Actually, I don't find the German grammar as difficult as people say, honestly! But what really drives me crazy is the vocabulary. I find extremely difficult to remember words. They all look the same to me...! I also find difficult to speak, but that's improving very slow too; I just don't have many chances to speak out of the classroom. And I think I do quite well with the writing as long as I've got a dictionary with me. I'm even considering writing a little bit in German on the blog in the next months; not yet a whole post translation, but maybe some summary. I think I would retain more vocabulary if I actually need to use it to express myself rather than just to do the homework or read boring texts. I also want to start in March to go more regularly to a nearby library after school to do my homework there and spend a couple of hours more everyday just reading books, comics, magazines, watching films and listening to audiobooks. That, the gym and the online courses about programming that I am doing keep me quite busy (= happy) and take most of my time. Ok, I'm on the right path with my German learning and the management of my free time to make the most of it.

However, I am not doing this just for the sake of doing it. Yes, somehow it's a reward, a prize, a treat to myself, a whole year where I want doing what I want. But on the other hand, I do it because I want to stay in Germany at least some more years, so it's linked to the second objective. For that, I want/need to study. Thinking about what to do next is taking a lot of my time as well. I've been going through endless sites of universities checking all their masters programs and, to my dismay, I haven't found much that suits me. Sure, there are some really interesting things to study but I have to keep a few things in mind before I decide: a) I prefer to study in English because, even if I learn good German, I hesitate it will be good enough to really understand well what I would learn in a university; b) it has to be interesting and motivating for me; c) it has to be useful and have a demand enough so I can be employable once I finish; d) and it should ideally have something to do with what I have done so far -it would be a pity if my degree in Art History, my career as an archaeologist and my years in Nintendo were not useful and I had to start again from 0 in another discipline. Taking these parameters into account, I observe at the moment three possibilities. All three have their pros and cons, like always in this life, and I would like to read/hear your opinion. Here they are:

Master of Science in Digital Humanities, Trier

Pros:
  • Digital Humanities sound perfect to me, at least in theory. My passion is IT, but my academical and most of my professional background is in humanities. This masters programme tries to join both disciplines in one. People from IT learn a bit about history, literature, art, philosophy... and people from humanities, like me, would learn a bit about programming, data bases, web design, data mining... Then there are other subjects where we all study together how to apply the knowledge about IT in order to work on humanities. As a friend of mine pointed out very well, it's like the left half of the brain connecting with the right half; a perfect combination for me.
  • It's free, no costs. You only have to pay the semester fees of the university (which include things like the students transport card).
  • It takes 4 semesters and you have to do a project on the fourth.
  • I think I could potentially find a job in different places as long as they were related to heritage like museums, institutions, libraries... but also other fields like software testing.
  • There are not many candidates.
Cons:
  • It's officially in German, although it has some subjects in English. The lady with whom I got in contact by email said that approximately 30% of the (compulsory) subjects were in English, 20% in German and the rest would depend on what I choose, the professor and the other students, but the programme is officially in German. If I want to study in German, I must pass first a specific exam to prove that I can have higher education in this language. The earlier I do the exam, the less ready I will be and chances to pass. I could do it in September right before the semester starts but the problem is, what happens to me if I fail? I will be fucked up. I will be leaving my place at the end of September and, if I fail the exam, I will have nowhere to go and nothing to do. I would have another chance in April 2016 but no place where to live and also I would waste 6 months living on my savings for nothing instead of being in the university. Of course, I could find a simple job, but that's not so "simple" and could take months as well.
  • Another con is the quality of the IT part. I mean, they will teach you some stuff from computing science but without all the hardcore mathematics, just basic stuff. However, I am not sure about how much sense this makes, because computer science is, after all, hardcore mathematics. Won't it be too shallow?

Master of Arts in Game Development and Research, Cologne

Pros:
  • It's entirely in English.
  • It's very interesting and taught in the Cologne Games Lab, which has a strong focus on videogames.
  • It is part-time, with only a day and half of lectures per week and lots of work to do on your own and also to have a part-time job, which would be great from a financial point of view.
  • As far as I've been told, the competition to get a place is not very strong.
  • It takes 4 semesters.
Cons:
  • It's not free. As well as the semester fees, there is an additional 850€/semester. It is still affordable and not too expensive but a lot more than the other options.
  • It is a bit conceptual... a bit too "creative"... little practical. It seems to focus on game design, which would be the most interesting path for me in the videogames industry (instead of programming and game arts), but I am not very sure about the real chances to find a job afterwards. This is an expanding industry but this master doesn't seem to give you so many professional skills.
  • The fact that there is so much free time -although part of it is to work on your own- makes me also hesitate about the "quality & quantity" of the topics taught in this program. It's only one and a half days per week... The rest depends on your creativity and your own research. There is surely not much you can learn compared to other programs that keep you longer in the classroom.
  • After the application is sent, there is a selection process which includes a small project that you have to "develop" in one month. If they are interested, they call you for an interview.

Bachelor of Arts in Digital Games, Cologne

Pros:
  • It's also taught entirely in English.
  • It's also taught in the Cologne Games Lab.
  • Sounds like a very exciting field to work with good professional prospects in a rapidly developing industry.
  • It is creative as well as demanding, definitely not boring.
  • It has three possible paths to focus: games informatics, games arts and games design.
  • It's full time, so it should go deep into every topic and really give you a good insight of them.
  • Part of the study (like it is normal in Germany) includes an internship, so it is practical as well as theoretical. It gives me the impression to really make you put your hands on the topic, versus the more conceptual aspect of the masters.
  • It's free, apart from the small university fees (around 250€/semester, which includes the public transport card) present in every other programme.
  • It has everything I want.
Cons:
  • Like the masters programme, there is a selection process and this is way harder. There is a lot of competition for this bachelor and they tend to look for people with a profile different to mine. They put more emphasis on creativity and my professional/academical background is everything but creative.
  • The biggest "con" of all: if everything goes ok, it takes 7 semesters to complete, that is to say 3.5 years. I'm not sure I've got enough money saved for such a long time. Cologne is not a cheap city and, since the bachelor is full-time, there would be little or no room to have a part-time job at the same time. Yes, I would have enough for a couple of years and then some "safety net" until I find a job, but 3.5 years (or more if I fail) is A LOT.

So, here are the present options. They could be more, as I keep an eye on the study offers I see. Besides, knowing myself, it could also happen that I do something totally different in the end after months of beating around the bush... The wise thing would be to go for all three programmes, of course, as chances are that some may not work out, but I have my doubts. I can't present the same project in the selection process if I apply for both the master and the bachelor programmes in Cologne, they ask for different things. And presenting two projects could mean "two mediocre projects", lowering the chances. However, the most interesting for me has more competition and... Argh!!

¿No será demasiado superficial?

Máster de Artes, Desarrollo e Investigación en Juegos, Colonia

Pros:

Licenciatura, Juegos Digitales, Colonia

Pros:

I was in 2014, and I survived

I can't complain about my life. Big disgraces have never happened to me and I hope things keep being this way. But 2014 has been so far the most bastard year of my existence, no doubt about it. It had to happen... A good thing of this is that it hasn't caught me by surprise, as I am usually quite a foresighted person. The changes came even a bit earlier than I expected them but I still have suffered, I even had physical pain due to the anxiety and the uncertainty of seeing how would everything turn out. But at least I've received finally that kick in the ass that I needed to start moving. I've realised that I can get too worried in vain for things I can't control, which increases the anxiety, the discomfort and the pain. (Mental note: I must manage better this situations in the future.) But I don't think I can be blamed for being motionless before the adversity or for not making an opportunity out of a problem. I think we can say that, despite being scared shitless, I have grabbed the bull by the horns. Now things are better and I am much more relaxed. I haven't chosen the easiest path either, but the one I think is the best. I am proud of that, whatever it brings in the end. I think I am doing the right thing. Another aspect to highlight is the huge amount of help I have received from friends, something impossible to pay back that has made possible for me to keep happy. Without them... no bull, no horns, no nothing.

After a stormy 2014 that has ended with my bones in the unemployment office, in a school and in another city, a 2015 arrived, though it won't bring me the stability either. Now I am seeing if I manage to calm the bull down because I have grabbed him but I can still get thrown away. The idea of a sabbatical year to learn German is good but it needs something to follow in order to be the best and not turn into a waste of time and money (and end up bashed by the bull). In fact, those are my two obsessions now: the time and the money. I have more and more greys in my beard, less hair on my head and less euros in my bank account... But I still have hair and euros, so I don't think that paying attention on such a couple of ridiculous obsessions at the moment is a good way of living my life. The moment has arrived when I must pay attention on the next step, which will be here before I run out of money and hair.

I need to find a motivation for all this to make sense, a reason to keep going. Attending lessons at the school to learn German and spending the rest of the time like a fool counting flowers on the sides of the path is not enough. I need to set a target and go for it, giving my best, and completely snub the flowers; even the path if it doesn't take me where I want. It wouldn't be the first time that I grab a machete and cross the wild jungle (scared shitless, ok, but with a fucking huge machete!). That's the reason why some weeks ago I started to check the possibilities to further my education in Germany, my first option although I don't rule out others. For that I need first to reach an excellent level by September. I could even afford to wait until April 2016, but there come into play those obsessions I've got: that time and that money. They shouldn't rule my life, I agree, but unfortunately, I must keep them in mind. Specially the money... In the best case scenario, it may be even longer than three years until I finish my studies and find a new source of income afterwards. And by that time I will be already 36 (being optimistic), I will have more salt than pepper in my beard and not a single euro.

So, for the time being, the target is set on September. If I pass the language test, I will be allowed to study in the university in this country of beer drinkers and sausage eaters that I like so much. Otherwise, I'll be fucked up, I won't have controlled the bull and I will end up thrown away, gored and without glory. We'll see what happens... but as we say in Spanish, we've fought bulls on worse rings.

Good news and boring news

Two weekends ago I had a good one, a great one in fact, for many reasons. The  basketball gay-inclusive tournament organised in Berlin by Vorspiel Club took place, I could be part of it and my shoulder feels ok after doing it! I was a bit hesitant to participate because the joint is not yet completely recovered and because I hadn't played basketball for 18 months. Still, I was feeling ok and I decided to try. Now I don't regret it at all! I was part of a team built up for the occasion with three guys coming from Barcelona and three others from Bologna (one of them being Spanish too). The six of them plus me were a gang rather than a real team. We didn't know each other and therefore had never played together. We didn't even have matching clothes. The result? Well... the most important thing is to have fun, isn't it...? Ok, ok, we played 5 games and lost 4. BUT we lost three of those games by 3 or less points and the fourth one against the final champions, so we can be very happy!! Hey, hey, let me remark that we didn't even know each other the day before. Besides, short after we started the first game, we lost one player to a bad knee injury so we were only 6 for the rest of the tournament. In any case, I had a lot of fun on the court and in the bars with the gang. Great people!! And the shoulder proves to keep getting better. I really have good sensations; I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I hope to be fully recovered soon.

Unfortunately, the basketball tournament has been the only highlight practically since I am in Berlin. My life here is quiet at the moment and leaving Frankfurt hasn't helped me to tidy up my own mind and make room for new ideas and projects. I don't do anything special, just going from home to the gym, the supermarket, sometimes the bars (happy hour on weekdays!) and the school. All these things are within a 1 mile radius. The only time I leave this circle is when I go to the unemployment office or when I rarely meet some friends in other districts. Just exceptionally, I went to a party with friends last night. I live in the big city but right now I lead quite a town-like life, almost like a village if it wasn't for the traffic. Not much culture, no museums, no concerts, no visits, no walks... I also keep busy doing some online courses about IT stuff, which I enjoy. The weather doesn't help much, that's also true: it is just starting to get cold slow by slow and the day gets dark very early (I've never lived so far north-east in this time zone).

Some friends and acquaintances ask me if I am ok, because they think this lifestyle is not normal in me. I partly understand them. It was not normal in the last 4.5 years when I was always on the road, making plans, going to every party, event, taking trains, planes, etc. However, I have not always been like that. Now it's not the right time for it. I will certainly go out more often, have more fun, see more things, visit museums and such once I sort out other things first. Life in Frankfurt was very carefree and I just had to worry about an easy job and how to enjoy my money. Nice, uh? But now I have other concerns in my head and, yes, I can also be the thoughtful and reflective type. Those who knew me before March 2010 know this aspect well. Now I see that people often don't actually trust me. They don't think I can get serious, stay at home and think my life along different lines. I've heard things like "oh, in Berlin you'll never manage to learn your German" or "they will teach you everything but the language there" and I feel disappointed, almost hurt. Ok, I've got a "reputation" thanks to posts like this and this... I realise that's the picture of myself that I project in most people these days. But that's a side of me which doesn't reflect what I am completely.

Things were starting slow but I feel fairly stuck right now. Or maybe this is the right pace but I just expected things to happen faster. I feel comfortable with the German lessons (I like my classmates and the teacher) but sometimes not as motivated as at the beginning. I wanted to have 12 months of enjoyment and two are gone already... Not much joy inside though. I feel I am mostly not good company these days, neither for myself nor for others. I am not focused, I don't know why. I miss my friends and specially the laughter I had with them. I also feel I am walking at the moment with no direction and I need to set some goals, for short, mid and long term to help me keep focused and to, hopefully, feel I am making some achievements, not just wasting here precious time, opportunities and money.

Buenas noticias y noticas aburridas

Guay, ¿no?

No veo yo mucho disfrute.

Everybody's free (to wear sunscreen)

Oh no / Oh no

You want my pussy in your face / Quieres mi coño en tu cara
My fingers up your ass / Mis dedos en tu culo
My lips around your clit / Mis labios en tu clítoris
My hands on your tits / Mis manos en tus tetas

Begging me for more / Me suplicas más
Oh darling, treat me like a whore / Oh nena, trátame como a una puta
I just want to fuck you on the floor / Sólo quiero follarte en el suelo
Fuck you on the floor / Follarte en el suelo
Until your pussy's sore / Hasta que te duela el coño
Fuck you on the floor / Follarte en el suelo
Until your pussy's sore / Hasta que te duela el coño

Doce y sumando

Twelve and counting

If nothing changes (and I hope it doesn't do it yet) from January 2007 to December 2014 I will have lived in 12 different places in 7 cities of 5 countries. These are many places and a lot of moves specially if you think that 4 out of these full 8 years I have lived in the same flat in Frankfurt. This time of my life has given me a lot, I was seeing myself quite settled in that city where I've felt at ease and I kept accumulating stuff; I was either bringing it from Vitoria or buying it somewhere else. As a result, the last move has been the heaviest of all by far. I will probably have to move again in one year but I hope not to accumulate more until then as well as to get rid of many things before I pack them again. This can't keep being like this...

After finishing my work at the end of August and having some pending stuff to do in September (Oktoberfest in Munich included), leaving Frankfurt and arriving to Berlin has been as easy as it could be. I wish things were always like that! I've been lucky with my landlords moving out of the flat there and also moving in here. Besides, I've counted on an army of friends who have helped me a lot, physically and mentally. Everything went very well and I am already living in my new home (the twelfth). I am getting used to it quickly, I like the flat, the neighbourhood too, I am moving around easily with my bike and, on top of that, the weather was wonderful for the first days. I even have had breakfast in the balcony without a T-shirt being already in October. ¡Tropical Berlin, hahaha! I have to make the most of it because the cold weather will start soon.

Now it's time to focus on what I've come to do here. I am still doing paperwork and bureaucracy for the unemployment office. I do not yet know how much and when I will start getting paid and that's a piece of information that I need to know as soon as possible so I can forecast how much I am going to spend during these 12 months. I have a rough idea, but I need to know the exact amount. The expenses and bills here have already started knocking on my door: the first month of rent, the deposit, some shopping and the first months of the German course. The lessons started on October 1st and I like the school, the teacher and the classmates. We'll see what comes out of all this... I haven't yet met all my friends in Berlin, that's something I shall do in the next few weeks.

So far, so good! Apart from the problems to get a working internet connection at home (first world's problems, but now it's fixed!), there is no other flaw. The last months in Frankfurt were full of ups & downs, mixed feelings, doubts, confusion, fear, plans for an uncertain future and memories of a past just gone. I hope to leave this behind because I've seen that things are turning out perfectly right and I get often too worried instead of enjoying what I've got. Since I started to suspect the job would come soon to an end, I've realised that I tend to be too pessimistic and a bit depressed, and that's neither reasonable nor healthy neither for me nor for the people around who bear with me with infinite patience. I want now 12 sabbatical months of happiness, of reward, of getting worried about strictly necessary things just at the right time, of seeing life again in the way I used to see it, of wolfing down the world, of walking on the street with earphones singing and dancing alone even if people look at me, 12 months of doing what I want to do and being happy about it.

A friend told me once on this blog: “It's humiliating to feel trapped in this life like in a grid of vertical and horizontal lines and see people like you who go through the diagram drawing a diagonal line (though always well planned). A flying route that you don't know where will take you but at least it takes you somewhere, and that's what life consists of: changes, new connections.” I want to think it is like that.

No me gusta decir adiós.

I don't like farewells

It's done, today was my "last day of work at Nintendo". I write it between quotation marks because my last day was actually yesterday and because I had nothing to do as I was free of projects since last week. Today many of my colleagues and me had to go just to be there for a while, say goodbye to everyone and then go home. I think I was already out before 11:00. The truth is that I haven't greeted-goodbye to many people. I don't like to say goodbye. Well, I don't like the drama of that moment. I like it when there is happiness, smiles, celebration... but no tears. Besides, I think I will keep in touch with many of the persons that matter to me, specially in this superconnected world where we live.

It is not the first time -nor the last one possibly- that I leave from a city, although I will have to settle down one day, I hope... I left from Vitoria but I didn't disappear from the lives of most of my friends there. They also stay as part of my life. We don't meet often but we still meet. It happened the same in Oxford, in Manchester and it will happen in Frankfurt. I am not a person who misses others a lot. Not sure whether that's something good or bad or I am a heartless monster, but the truth is that I get used easily to the new circumstances and I always look forward to whatever comes next.

However, I am not made of steel and things are neither simple nor nice. I'm sorry that I have to leave the job and my colleagues in these circumstances because it wasn't my decision. I have had the chance to work in a very big company, known worldwide, doing a job more or less amusing and new for me. I have been able to see the impact of it on society (I love to see people with their consoles on the street). But the best of all, no doubt and by far, has been the people I have met there.

My colleagues have been a crucial part to understand how happy I've been in a city where many people give you the feeling of not being happy. I can't describe the motivation these colleagues have given to me for 4.5 years to wake up in the mornings and go to the office to see them, talk to them, listen, laugh and work together. The best drug I have ever tried! But their contribution hasn't been limited to work: they have made me a better person. I owe them a lot of what I am today. Thank you all for the 4.5 you have given to me because you are the best that has happened in this time: Ana, Iñaki, Amaury, Álex, Carlos, Cris, Dani H., Dani P., David N., Diego, Edu, Emilien, Estíbaliz, Gunnar, Javier, Iván, Marc, Margherita, María, Mari, Marzia, Nacho, Nuria, Rubén, Sebastian, Silvia and so many others to a lesser extent. Guys, I don't like farewells, but I love reunions.

Four years later

The Gay Games 2014 are already running in Cleveland since yesterday. Four years ago they took place in Cologne, but I was just arrived in Germany and didn't have the chance to participate. I could still manage to book a train ticket, a bed in a hostel and attend the opening ceremony. Even though it was far from being a success (lots of criticism to the organisation and low attendance) it was important for me to be there and witness such an event. I promised to myself that I would join the next time, Cleveland 2014. However, the shoulder injury that is still keeping me away from the gym and the basketball courts since July 2013, and the unstable job situation have prevented me from attending the Games in Cleveland, something that would have taken a considerable amount of time and money.

I remember that, during the opening ceremony, while everyone was happy, celebrating, cheering, in good mood... they suddenly presented someone who was booed. I had no idea who he was, I just got that he was a politician, a gay politician. But obviously people were not happy with him... I learnt later that his name is Guido Westerwelle, minister of foreign affairs at that time and born not far from Cologne (and yes, I learnt also other funny stories about him which made me understand why he was not very popular). The booing surprised me, but I had no opinion about him, of course. So I just listened to the speech, short but categorical. I liked it and it was strange to see that everyone was in the end cheering and clapping, despite the not-very-warm welcoming. That change surprised me even more but I realised it represented the power of his words and how people felt somehow identified with the speech. I think everyone (especially those like me who didn't know him) understood that, maybe for once and according to the circumstances there, he didn't speak as the politician he was but as a gay man who had the chance to express himself in front of a microphone. I think everyone understood (inlcuding him) that he was not representing anyone there, but himself and, at the same time, all of us. You can listen to the speech, the initial booing and the cheering on this video. It takes less than 9 minutes.

That speech is still in my head and I watch it from time to time. I was just arrived in Germany and just coming out as a gay man to the people around me (colleagues at that time). I said back in 2008 that I chose to be bisexual but actually I didn't. What I did was accepting me as gay, getting used to it, freeing from myself and my own prejudices, since I've been blessed with friends and family who would not care less about these topics. I found myself thinking that I chose to be bisexual but realising that I was actually homosexual, which is of course something not chosen (can you choose who to fall in love with?). I didn't decide to be bisexual, I didn't realise I was homosexual, I just decided to experience it.

There is film, a romantic comedy titled The Broken Hearts Club, about a group of gay friends which I must admit I haven't seen myself. Some years ago, chatting with a friend, he showed me a fragment on Youtube (I couldn't find it this time, sorry!). It was just the beginning of the film and it said something I really liked and have kept since: "A lot of people ask me when I first knew I was gay. The fact is that I don't know; I can't remember. But what I do remember, what I can recall, is the moment I first realised I was ok with myself. It was when I met these guys: my friends". I think the moment I first realised I was ok with myself was that trip to Cologne, that opening ceremony, those Gay Games. I wish I could be in Cleveland now. I will hopefully be part of Paris 2018.
