See you soon, dirty old town

To tell you the truth, Manchester is not exactly where I have lived these last three months. Yes, I've lived just few minutes walking form the city centre but it is actually a different district of the Greater Manchester: the City of Salford. It has its own university, central station, cathedral... Manchester stretches with a north-south orientation whereas Salford is right to the west, that's what makes me be closer to city centre than most of the people who live in Manchester itself.

The thing is that it is not the best place in the world, but I have really liked living here and it has given me exactly what I was looking for when I moved in, except for a job of course. I regret I haven't had the time to know it better and settle down here. My wings seem to be stronger than my roots and I fly away again.

The luggage is ready. Everything is packed waiting to be taken to the airport and get a sticker that will send it with me to Bahrain. I will miss the urban landscape I see from the window, the neighbourhood, the accent, the flat, my flatmate, the nice people I have met, the NW of England, the feeling of being here because it was here where I wanted to be now. You are not the best place in the world, but you represent what I was seeking and I hope to see you soon. I will miss you,
dirty old town.

Now I am going to the Persian Gulf, where the weather will be very hot. I am going to work finally and work hard. I will read a lot in my free time. Well, Bahrain is small and the capital is even smaller so I also hope to be able to get to know it well in the next couple of months. You know where to come to read about it. Blog, ergo sum: as long as the blog exists, I exist. Thank you for being here with me.

Voy a trabajar finalmente y trabajar duro.

From north to south

Since the project in Bahrain was confirmed, I've been travelling a bit. Partly for pleasure and partly for 'business'. As I don't know if I will be coming back to Manchester, not even to the north-west, after coming back from the Persian Gulf, I didn't want to leave without visiting some places. Besides, I have had to go to Oxford for some project matters so I took advantage of it to spend few days and meet people there. I also hope to visit another couple of places before I leave. I take it as a small holidays to switch after those months of inactivity and put my head in the Middle East. I will be quite busy the two weeks I will still be here. I've got plenty of things to prepare: shopping, suitcase, things to leave here, read something about Bahrain, learn some words in Arabic, get ready the small laptop with everything I will need there (mainly applications but also plenty of music and films -the big laptop will remain here), etc. Oh well, I have to focus on this a bit because the last week and a half I've spent quite longer everywhere else but in Manchester.

On Wednesday 3rd I went to Leeds. I found a really cheap offer for £4 return by bus and I didn't think twice. Besides, I've got an acquaintance there whom I wanted to visit and he was happy to show me the city (you know, it is always better with a local). We walked mainly in the city centre and I found it quite beautiful and nice. It was comfortable to move around although it was a bit hilly and I like the cities as flat as possible. I found it modern and beautiful, maybe a bit like a mix of Oxford (with kind of monumental buildings) and Manchester (with modern buildings made of glass and others with an industrial touch). I wouldn't mind to live and work there, besides I saw an area that reminded me of my dear Cowley road in Oxford, where I've lived quite a long time.

On Friday 5th I went to Glasgow, capital city of Scotland, to spend the weekend and to visit a friend. I had never been to Scotland and I had never been that far north in my life either. I arrived early in the morning and I first explored a bit the city on my own. I visited the cathedral and the city centre, commercial streets, George Square, the Gallery Of Modern Art... I met my friend later and I visited less touristy and/or central places during the weekend. I went to the Burrell Collection and I found it was a good museum in terms of exhibition and the building itself (I am quite fussy with museums in general) except for the leaks... We also went to the People's Palace and The Barras market among other places. I really liked Glasgow a lot in general and I expected something much worse. The city is big and modern, the centre is easy to walk and beautiful, the people was very nice and I found it cheap. If I have to find drawbacks, I'd say that the accent is really difficult to understand (but not impossible with a bit of patience), it is quite far from everything (except Edinburgh) and in winter has very few hours of sunlight. Anyway, I think I wouldn't mind to live and work there either.

Last Wednesday, 09/09/09, I went to Oxford because I had a meeting with the project manager, the first visit since I left. I stayed 3 nights in my former house and so I could meet my dearest ex-housemates, who hosted me very well. It was great to be there again. I also could meet some friends and ex-colleagues (including my students of Spanish) but I regret to not have met Nico, my best friend in Oxford. He had to come to Liverpool and Manchester exactly the same days I was there...

And I went to London on Saturday morning to spend the weekend and meet more people. It was quite quiet, without special visits. We went to a small festival in front of the Big-Ben tower (which by the way, it is the name of the bell inside the clock, not the name of the tower!) and on Sunday evening there was a Pride Party in Soho, so I can already say I've been to one. I didn't feel prouder, but uglier as expected hahaha. It wasn't awesome either, we were just a couple of hours or three having a drink. Apart from the speakers on the streets playing loud music, I don't think that is very different to a normal Saturday with good weather when people go to drink on the street. Well, there was some 'party atmosphere' but nothing spectacular. Anyway, it was already Sunday evening of course... After the short walk in Soho (I carried the backpack and the laptop) I took the train back to Manchester.

I've got quite a lot of things to do in the next two weeks. You have to add to the list above that I want to go back to Chester, which I already visited but I quite liked it. I also want to meet a friend who is now living in Liverpool (so I visit it, of course). Then, this Saturday a friend is coming to visit Manchester; it's my turn to be the host. And my friend from Liverpool will probably come on Sunday, so we swap visits. If I am very busy and nothing extraordinary happens these days, the next entry may well be already from the Persian Gulf! I have no clue about how easy or difficult it will be to connect to the internet from there so please be patient. I'll do as much as I can. In theory, I am leaving on September 26th and come back on November 21st or 22nd. You know where to come to know more details!

Manchester is over...

Taking advantage of the first anniversary of my coming out, I was planning to write an entry about Manchester's Gay Pride, which took place last weekend. I don't think I would have felt prouder afterwards, maybe uglier, but I was curious about it. I'll leave it for another year because I've got something more important to tell you: after the last two months' uncertainty and insecurity looking for a job in Manchester, I've decided that I am leaving at the end of September. I regret I haven't been able to settle down here, find a normal job and have a normal life (well, as normal as you can expect from someone like me). I felt like spending some time living in the centre of a big city like this one, enjoy the concerts, the cultural life, the variety of events and venues, the people, the airport and the train stations to visit fast and easily other places... Or even to go to a football game one day, why not? Yes, I know I am not passionate about football, but a Champions' League game in Manchester United's stadium must be an intense experience! I may try again after few months... Who knows? I don't want to feel defeated but I will have a break by the moment and I won't continue to live in Manchester.

Despite this decision, I am in good mood. I had an interview last week for a job I quite liked: it seemed to be easy, achievable according to my skills, right in the city centre, in a company I liked a lot, with a quite kind people... Both previous e-mail communication and interview were very friendly, very pleasant. I did some some previous tests I passed successfully (I was the only one who managed to finish on time and got the second best score) and I think that the interview was very good. I was confident answering all the questions and I could see how the members of the panel nodded continuously. They told me that they would give me an answer by this week's Wednesday (September 2nd). It looked the ideal situation: a permanent job that really suited me in a good company in Manchester city centre. Exactly what I have been looking for the last two months. However, I sent them an e-mail on Tuesday night to practically rule out my application. Well, I told them I would love to be offered the position but with one condition: I wouldn't be able to start before December 1st. Only a horrible list of other candidates for the post would make them choose me and they didn't do it, of course. Why did I do that? Because I have got already another job!

Yes, I was offered another job few days ago, which I have already accepted and I will start in late September for two months. The fact that I haven't waited to be offered exactly the ideal job I was seeking and I have preferred to accept a temporary one somewhere else may look shocking. Well, the thing is that it is to work as a buildings archaeologist although it will also involve some digging. Besides, it is a project with the Oxford-Brookes University, I will work with Javier, a Spanish friend with whom I also worked in Oxford Archaeology, they pay well and they provide the transport, the acommodation and the food. It will be a good opportunity to improve my cv and gain more experience. So I accepted the offer after thinking a bit about it and assuming that it would be difficult that the company in Manchester waited until December (they told me in the interview they needed someone asap). Oh, yes! And let me tell you that the project will take place in the Persian Gulf: I am leaving for the bright lights of Bahrain in three weeks!!

No quiero sentirme vencido.

Downhill

After Amaral's drippy song and the unique entry I posted last time, I think it is time to tell something interesting. Does anybody have anything interesting to tell? Nobody? Me neither. I haven't found any job yet. I am getting bored and tired of doing everyday the same -applying for jobs and nothing. I have had some short interviews on the telephone and two face-to-face. One was unfortunately unsuccessful, the other one was for a company that looked quite dodgy and I decided not to go ahead. I googled their telephone number afterwards and found out that it was a fucking scam and many people had complained already about them. I was happy to see my instincts were right.

I have some new hopes though. I have found some websites and agencies which specialise in language jobs and I may find something where I can use my Spanish (and my poor Italian -poorer everyday). I also have started applying for jobs in other cities and towns across the UK. Yes, I came to the bright lights of Manchester because it was the place where I wanted to live, I fancied a big city, it is cheap and lively... but I am disheartened. I am starting to think that perhaps this is just not the right place nor the right time. I have to widen the range of possibilities and that includes applying for jobs in other places. I would relocate anywhere right now if they offered me a job for at least 6 months no matter the salary. I am also starting to think, or realise rather than think, that I am at least a month late. I should have left Oxford before; I spent too long in the limbo. Well, I left as soon as I made the decision and I can not change that. I have to put up with what I have today.

The bad new is that today I have more than tomorrow but less than yesterday. I am running out of money and this will be a serious problem soon if the tendency continues to drop downhill. If it doesn't improve, it gets worse. I can survive few more weeks but if I don't find any source of income soon then... then I don't know what is going to happen but I guess it is time to think about it as the moment is likely to arrive sooner than later. Any suggestion?

Some people say it is normal. We are in the worst part of the worst recession in the last 50 years, I am a foreigner, Manchester is a city with many workers and I started looking for a job only a month and a half ago. Not even in normal conditions people usually find job that easily. And I think they are right. However, on the other hand, one feels like a fool when looking for a job is the only thing he has done for 7 weeks without success. I hear very often that I am so clever, that I am good at many things that something will come up soon, that a great job might be just round the corner, that people are sure I will find something, that they wish me the best of lucks, that I am in their best thoughts... Very nice and very encouraging. They have the opposite effect though and I am starting to find these statements hurting. I am tired of hearing always the same. If I was so clever and so good I wouldn't be in this situation. Every word weights on my shoulders and sinks me into the mud a bit more. I feel I am failing to myself and disappointing them in some way. This is making me isolate sometimes from friends because I know the whole conversation is going to be about my no-job situation and it will end with the same words. I don't want to isolate from my friends, that's horrible.

Oh well, I keep in some way in good spirit after all. Honestly, I do! Don't ask me why or how, but I do. If this situation had come in January or February when I was so down, I would have ended up hanging from a tree or something like that. Probably a bridge if it was in Manchester, haha. I look around, I read the news and I see that there are people in much worse situation than me on this planet. I am young, free and healthy; I am where I want, I do what I want with my life; I can leave or I can stay and I don't regret anything I have done so far. That's something not many people can say and I consider myself lucky and happy.

Cuesta abajo

¿No? Pues yo tampoco. Todavía no he encontrado trabajo.

Si no mejora, empeora.

Letra / Lyrics

Uh, no sabe a dónde va / Uh, she doesn't know where she's going
pero sí sabe que algún día llegará. / but she does know that she'll arrive one day.
Uh, no tiene maldad / Uh, she's not evil
y sus amigos creen que pronto volverá. / and her friends believe that she'll come back soon.
La vida en la pequeña aldea / The life in the little village
working the fields started to wither her.
Y se ha marchado sin maletas / And she left without suitcases
and with the head full of stories to make up.
Uh, no sabe a dónde va / Uh, she doesn't know where she's going
pero sí sabe que algún día llegará. / but she does know that she'll arrive one day.

Almost

I almost got a job today, but it couldn't be possible finally. I went to an employment agency last Tuesday, the first time I try one. I sent the cv because they were looking for someone fluent in Spanish. It was a telemarketer job: phone people to convince them to buy something. I had to phone companies to sell them software, something ridiculous coming from me as I use free software (and I put it on my cv -maybe that's why they didn't like it, haha). The bad thing is that it wasn't very well paid and the office was very far from where I live. Really far, in fact out of Manchester. I didn't like the idea of spending half of my day and my wages in going to work but at least it was something to start with and I wouldn't have minded to do it for few weeks or a couple of months. It was temporary anyway. The guy from the agency was quite convinced about getting the job but apparently the company has found someone else by itself. So I'm fucked up and still looking. I'll try other agencies this week to see if I am luckier.

As for the rest, there is little else to tell. I like Manchester city centre and all its old and new buildings. Last weekend I went to the (Afro)Caribbean Carnival which takes place every year. It was funny although not too funny when you are alone. The weather wasn't bad on Saturday but it rained the night before and it was quite muddy. There were colourful and noisy amateur performances. Plenty of leaves, bright clothes, amazing costumes... I was entertained for a while.

I also saw the other day the first MacDonalds Mac-auto of the UK here in Manchester. You can imagine how bored I am to be here telling you these things hahaha. Well, I also went to visit Chester and I think it is very beautiful. Lovely to spend one day and see it, but living there must be a boredom torture. You know, like Oxford but even worse. Or like being jobless in Manchester, but even worse. Well, no, not worse than this
...

Casi

No-news

I haven't posted anything since I arrived to Manchester. There must be something to tell after two weeks in a new big city to write on a blog, must it not? He might be having problems with the internet connection?, someone may think. He might not have time enough to write because he's doing plenty of other things?, some other may think. He might have been hit by the tram?, the most optimistic may be thinking. I'm sorry for the optimistic one but I haven't been hit by anything or anyone. The thing is that I have nothing to tell. In these two weeks I haven't done absolutely anything. If there is a word to define this period that's boredom.

That's normal I think. We start from the premise that I don't know anybody. I spend most of the time at home, mainly surfing the internet looking at job offers, reading the news, sending e-mails... I watch films, listen music, don't read anything... I go out a bit to do the shopping, see the surroundings and go to the city centre sometimes, which is just 2 minutes walking so pretty good. I think the job issue will take longer although I must admit that I haven't been from bar to bar to see if they need staff. I'm searching office-based jobs; administration assistant and simple things like that as they only ask for IT skills. But a friend has told me that they will never offer me a job like this because they look for people with basic secondary education (with GCSE level, not even A-level), who don't think much by themselves and with no further aspirations, easy to keep long. But if I aim a bit higher, according to my academic level, the jobs are mentally more demanding and I don't feel like being paid for thinking because now I don't want to work thinking. Furthermore, in all of them they ask for experienced people and I don't have any experience other than as an archaeologist. So either I reduce my cv or I lie or I don't know, but I will have to change my 'strategy'. Well, some of the jobs I have applied for still have their deadlines far so I will have to wait longer to rule them out.

Regarding the question why I don't go out to explore the city, it is an issue that more than one has raised. "Go out, have fun" they tell me. Look, first of all I don't think I should be having fun if I don't have a job yet and my near future is extremely uncertain. I'm not going to have fun, I know it. So I prefer not to go out rather than going out not to have fun in a situation which is supposed to be funny and exciting. I prefer not to waste these situations and make the most of them when I really feel like doing it. As soon as they offer me a job, if I have some days before I start, I may get away a couple of days. I will see. And on the other hand I'm not in a rush to that thing of explore the city and I think that it is not the right approach for my life in this city. I am keen to know Manchester but as a citizen, not as a tourist. I want to see it when I have to go here or there, when I go out to party, when I go to work, when I meet someone... When I do the normal life. I don't feel like going out to see monuments and museums. That's why I left Oxford

And regarding the flat and the flatmate, everything is very well to be honest. He was right when I came to visit it for the first time and told me that, despite the new building, the quality is not very good. But I don't expect to spend here many years so I don't mind. The bedroom is small and single but the living-kitchen-dinning room is a clear space and with more light so between one space and the other I don't find the apartment too small. I talk to my flatmate when he's around although he spends quite a lot of time out. He's nice and we get on well. Yesterday for example we went to do some shopping together. And every Monday he cooks special dinner at the pub where he works (very good and very cheap) so I am making a habit of going there every week.

And this is all after two weeks. Rather little... If things don't change, I'll copy and paste this entry again.

No-novedades

No he escrito nada desde que he llegado a Manchester.

Veo pelis, escucho música, no leo nada ahora...

No me apetece ahora salir a ver monumentos y museos.

Leaving for the bright lights of Manchester

Last Friday I had the last drinks with my friends here. It was my official farewell and plenty of people who have been part of these almost two and a half years came to say goodbye. I was really happy to see them there and equally happy for those who couldn't come but sent me e-mails or text messages or phoned me. It was a normal night though, not a big party. Nothing that I hadn't done on a normal Friday but this time with more people; with all together!

The rest of the weekend has been quiet but very busy. I spent most of the Saturday sending cv's and job applications. Today Sunday I met finally the first person I was living with when I arrived to Oxford: Vanessa, my Chinese landlady and housemate along with Chao. He couldn't come this time but we've been chatting a while on the telephone. I have also met my lovely 6 months old "Chinese niece", Rachel. She's so cute! It's been good to meet on my last day those who were the first friendly faces I met.

And now, Sunday night, my housemates have given me a T-shirt to say goodbye. And I almost cry, because I am a man who cries. I look at my bedroom and everything is packed, ready for tomorrow morning. I leave for the bright lights of Manchester. Oxford is over, although the memories, the friends and the desire to come back and visit it will always be with me. But now, I'm looking forward to seeing what's next.
